It's just a place to talk about books, since we already have a movies/songs section. >.<

And yeah, I am a little freaked out at being the first to post. =.='

So, how about a classic? Harry Potter?
Everyone either seems to hate it or love it, sort of like Twilight, and it's got some really die-hard fans.
Everyone's talking about it again since the movie just came out.

Personally, I liked the third book the best.
Oh wow.. so they're iphone earpods? Wait, I mean, earrings! No! EARPHONES!!! I MEANT EARPHONES!
If you're reading this, then good for you. :3

werr

HP and twilight really are the same, although I like twilight and hate HP  ;D

Tammy

Wait...you say they're the same, and yet you hate one and like the other?
Talking about Twilight, what was your favourite character?
I actually liked Jasper the best. XD
Oh wow.. so they're iphone earpods? Wait, I mean, earrings! No! EARPHONES!!! I MEANT EARPHONES!
If you're reading this, then good for you. :3

werr

I like Alice and hate Jackob  :o

When i say they are the same I mean that they are of the same kind, but I am not supoused to like all, lets say, sci-fi mangas right?

Xye

I can only read "books" with pictures hahaha XDD I cannot stand anythign with more than 50 words written on a page O__O;;;;

Lol... I love books AND manga  ::)

YAYYYY I am not a dust speck anymore!!!

Tammy

Good Job! *clap clap clap*

But it's a lot easier to find well written manga than well written books. because, in a book, you need to focus on sentence structure, descriptions, wording, and all of that, whereas in manga you just need lots of pretty pictures. XD
Oh wow.. so they're iphone earpods? Wait, I mean, earrings! No! EARPHONES!!! I MEANT EARPHONES!

Sakira

I like the Harry Potter movies ^.^ Didn't read the books though o:

I read all the Twilight books before the movie xD

Out of all the Twilight books I would have to say Breaking Dawn is my favorite. (:

Favorite character... hmm... That would be hard to say they all have their good and bad qualities. I'd have to think about that. =p

I can say I didn't really like Leah's character. >.>

Tammy

You should read the books, a lot of detail is omitted in the movies. :D
You like Breaking Dawn? My favourite was a tie between Twilight and Eclipse. I didn't really like New Moon, I thought it was rather pointless, though I did enjoy the character development in Jacob. I just thought it was slightly random to suddenly have werewolves popping up. =.=' But I'm not complaining, they were a pretty good read.

Oh wow.. so they're iphone earpods? Wait, I mean, earrings! No! EARPHONES!!! I MEANT EARPHONES!

Yume

I feel so out for not reading these trendy novels (or whatever you call them). insert some random onion emoticon
I only read HP till the 5th book like super long ago.

I agree about it being easier to find nice manga than books. For some reason I'm so picky about books and writing style. I don't read horror, chick lit (not so much) etc. but yet I read manga-equivalents. Either that or I can dump a book after a few pages but for a manga I can somehow at least make it to the next chapter. =w="

The last book I read and enjoyed was The Remain of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro...well if anyone reads similar stuff like me. D: I'll gladly take recommendations. I want to read the Wicked Years series but the copy in my school library is constantly being reserved. T_T

Someone mentioned classics - I only touch them in Literature classes (which I shall take no more). @__@

Ars Sator

Out of the people that I go watch movies with, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who was not read a complete Harry Potter novel. Which essentially means that when everyone is in the movie complaining about what a horrid portrayal of their favourite scene, I'm genuinely ignorant to what's going to happen next.

I've started to read some classic literature books. Mainly because I've found that its a whole lot easier to read them at this age than when I was, say, twelve years old.

I'm with Yume. I don't read to many modern novels and out of the recent books I've read, most of them are related to Literature class.

As of now, I've reread Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (read it early this year, and doing it again to remember what actually happened in the book) and just finished The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Literature is forcing me to read King Lear by Shakespeare.

Really gotta read newer books.
My friends I have the reading habits of a 60 year old librarian...
<.<;

Criss

I guess i'm with Yume and Aquila. I don't like reading modern novels prefer classical ones. But i'm very pricky about it, they must be interesting enough or else i just dump them somewhere.. I don't really like the book of my literature class coz they're too common and it's the very simplified version (when you read it, it feels like something's missing)

But unlike Aquila or Yume, i read the HP series <3

I also agree about it being easier to find nice mangas than novels.
And mangas are so much easier to read !!

werr

Currently I like Eragon... probably because I am still waiting for the fourth and last book.
I am just like that, after reading/watching something I find it really difilcult to read again and unless it is incomplete I quickly lose interest in it XD

nancy

Oh man..."modern" books huh? The last text/book I read was something from around 500 A.D. about Alexander the Great (of course it was translated)...and this is the last "english-written" book I've read T.T

And Aquila, I totally know how you feel about the HP and movie thing, I'm the same xD

I'm pretty sure HP is not a bad book, but if I am going to read sci-fi, I would rather read:
George R. R. Martin - Song of Ice and Fire series
Weis and Hickman - Death Gate Cycle
and etc...
I hate losing. I hate crying. I want to keep laughing.

Yume

@ Aquila: Oh gosh P&P! I had to study it for Literature (though we would pester our teacher to show us an old film version!), alongside Shakespeare's Othello. I guess Literature forces us to read all the classics. ^^"

@ Criss: Yes, so agree about the dumping. XD" Sometimes I wish I could be like my brother who is less picky. But then again when I see the stuff he's reading I'm glad I don't. Interesting read > boring read, struggling to finish anytime.

Criss

#15
@Yume: XD" I have a brother and he too is less picky. But it's his tastes that are bad, he ONLY reads horror books with lots of blood. Urgg >.>

Ars Sator

Just bought a Popular Penguins print of The Art of War by Sun-Tzu. Appears that my reading tastes are going even further back in time rather than forward.

Though, I gotta note, I do read a fair bit of modern books too. Just recently being reading lots of classics.
Tobruk and Kokoda by Peter Fitzsimmons (Australian World War II books. Really good. Reads like fiction but is very true to what actually happened in the war), the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy series and other stuff.

I'm thinking of starting to read the Bourne series. You know, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, etc.
Although I read an overview, I think I prefer the movies to the book.

Yume

@ Criss: LOL. Gaah I can't handle horror books at all! Eek. Dx

Hmm the modern books I read are like...not the popular kind perhaps. I'm following Paulo Coelho and Haruki Murakami's novels. ^^ A more recent novel I want to read is The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. *__* His Shadow of the Wind was awesome.

Michiko

I like reading novels. Fiction's the most. Non-fiction the least. Though I read both of them.
Genre is suspense, mystery, romance.

HP is better than Twilight imo. Twilight cliche imo; with vampire-human love and such.

@Yume: Oh my, Haruki Murakami :) He's really a good writer ^^

Yume

@ Mihara: Ahh yes, he is! ^^ His stuff are always interesting.

Tammy

Have any of you guys heard of fictionpress? It's similar to fanfiction.

Yes I have. XD I've a dead account there. Ahaha. Do you have an account there?

Tammy

Yes. It's dead too. I just wanted a place to store all my fav stories. But there are a couple of good stories there.
for example, QUEEN OF GLASS! I couldn't believe it when she took it down! TT.TT
But apprently she's going to try and get it published, so that's okay, I guess.

Eek I hate it when stories get taken down (willingly or not).
I haven't been to fictionpress.com since forever and all the stories I keep track of are very old. ^^"

Max

I started reading HP when I was 6 years old so i'm a fan from WAY back. And yes, I did check my mail for my hogwarts letter. daily rofl. I liked it (hermione is my idol), but i think it got really predictable in books 6 and 7. i love book 5 because of the whole like, authority challenging thing, and book 6 was ok, but it made draco look really bad. i like draco. and book 7 was just like wow..... like we all didn't see this coming : P

and I loved twilight (the first book only) because it was just sooooooo sappy and predictable and all of that. it's like shoujo manga, in book form. but as the series went on i started to like it less. i just stopped reading it when they got into the whole native american folklore bit in eclipse i was like..... wow, no wonder bella fell asleep -_-

and I love horror fanfictions, because the authors get SO creative. and have no problems with killing off characters, because they're not getting paid! (that and my favorite anime/manga to read fanfics on is Ghost Hunt). I should totally go there...... the only places i've ever gone are fanfiction.com and..... i think it was thepokemontower.com (go ahead, laugh : P)

drexizle

Hm... I'm really into like, psychological thrillers and all that :3

How to explain the genre? I guess it's like, focuses more on a person's mental ability and their willpower over their actions (I think?), I just can't explain it very well xD But it keeps me on my toes :3 Think of it as a thriller over a person's mental state... BAH ! I just can't , sorry xD.

I'm not really into Twilight either, and it's been such a big hype around here too :|. The first book was alright, but it didn't make me want to continue the series. Did you hear they're making a graphic novel adaptation of it? ;0!

There's this one book I really like, Tales of Beauty and Cruelty (forgot the author Dx) but they're all short stories (oneshots?) and they were just, kuuuu <3.

(OO: Graphic novel adaption!? Wonder who's gonna illustrate it.)

And I'm going to check out for Tales of Beauty and Cruelty now. :=X: Short stories + retold fairytale classics = <3

just a suggestion...
that if you're looking for something light and fun,
chick-lit.
sophie kinsella's ur best bet! =)

Max

I'm absolutely dreading that graphic novel. then every popular annoying kid in my school will be convinced that they know what real manga/graphic novels are. no. bad.

and after seeing the graphic novel for Maximum Ride (best book in the world! Drex, you should read it) I thought it was the ugliest thing in the world even though i loved the story. because it's probably going to be very..... idk, comic book-looking or something like that.

I am a major Harry Potter fan. <3
I love J.K.Rowling. ^-^
She said she won't be writing any more fantasy books, but I'll still read her books. Her writing is simply captivating and enrapturing.
You often feel like your there at Hogwarts. I'm a mystery, fantasy, adventure person, so I really enjoyed her books.
The Twilight Saga is a series I dislike. :/
The first book had so much potential and the storyline was likable and creative. The way Stephanie Meyer developed it was basically road-kill. I got through the first book and wanted to shoot myself when I thought about finishing the Saga. The second book was about Bella lamenting over the fact that Edward left her... We get it you're sad, get over it. It was such a drag and bore to read about how depressed she was. -.- However, the finale ticked me off the most. She builds the plot up to a dramatic showdown, and all we get is an anticlimactic disappointment. Bella becomes super beautiful and has powers beyond everyone else. I hate perfect characters. I like fantasy, but to an extent. The characters, at least, have to be real. There's hardly any character development seen. I think most of the fans love the series just for "Edward."
Personally, I find her writing mediocre. I find it an insult to J.K.Rowling to even compare the two.
Wow~ I certainly am pent up on ranting about Twilight. >w<;;
Just my opinion. :P

^^ You could try "Lords of Discipline" by Pat Conroy. I was skeptical when I first picked up the book for English class but it turned out to be a delight to read. It pertains to a student a military school and it's filled with comedy, mystery, and adventure. It's a book I would have passed over on my own if my teacher hadn't suggested it, but it was my pleasure in the end to have read such a memorable book. I highly encourage you give it a try, although it is a bit on the lengthy side if you're looking for some light reading.

Finished reading the entire Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series.
By far the best science fiction comedy series ever written in the history of mankind. And probably in all time, including the future.

The series essentially just shoves me more toward the geeky side than anything else, especially when I go out and celebrate Towel Day and make reference to 42 being the answer to life, the universe and everything.

Ah, good times.

Reading King Lear now, as part of my Literature course.
How many of you guys do Literature? Pretty sure there was more than just me.

If you're looking for something chicklit-like, but unique (I can't stand 'typical', cliche chicklit. Shoujo manga is okay, because you just get a little annoyed, but it doesn't take up much of your time - but writing...) go for Carpe Diem, by Autumn Cornwell. It's really quite funny, and very different.

weee i like books with Romance but not too much romance like fantasy/romance/thrillers is good for me something like Twilight. There is another series i got reallyyy addicted *actually 2 XD* it is the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare andd Aisling Grey Guardian series by Kathie MacAlister both are Comedy/Fantasy/Romance/Action wee you guys should check both this series out! At the moment i am reading Fear by Jeff Abbott yesh i am picky when it comes to books and lol i get bored very easily  :=D:

 :=X: Twilight...
I always wondered how Edward felt when she had her monthly visits. I thought her blood drove him crazy. Hmm...

QuoteI always wondered how Edward felt when she had her monthly visits. I thought her blood drove him crazy. Hmm...

Darn, the same thing I was thinking about :wahaha: I read all that suffering: how he couldn't stand her smell, and then I thought: "Man, what about periods?! O.O;;" He should've left her bloodless xD

I read everything... I mean, yeah, everything. Currently reading "Spartacus" by Raffaello Giovagnoli. Thought, it might be a good idea to read something classic.
I've read all Harry Potter and "Twilight", and am currently restraining myself from reading the rest from twilight-saga, coz I don't have time to relax and enjoy my reading, so it's best to leave them be right now. *watches how 3 books stare at her from the bookshelf*
Anyhow, I don't need to buy new books or go to the library probably for a year, coz my room is covered with them ~~|D I have this uncontrollable desire to buy interesting books when I'm in the bookstore, so yeah

I think I'm a total book-worm, I mean I just love reading. I remember when I was a teenager and started to notice the books my mom was reading... the ones, that weren't about animals and stuff but about... you know, people in love, hehe x3 I read them too  xD
Then one day my mom was like "where's my book" and I was like "I... don't... know" O///O;; That was embarassing  :swt:

Lastly I read "The Farseer" trilogy (The Assassin's Apprentice, The Royal Assassin, The Assassin's Quest)

I am now reading the sequel to that trilogy which is another trilogy "The Tawny Man" (Fool's Errand, The Golden Fool, Fool's Fate) that follow the events 15 years after the prequel.

All six books are really good, but also really long. Each consist of about 400-800 pages and 200-350k words. The author is amazing, I have never read a book so detailed and with such good descriptions.

That's too true. I mean, come on! What's with telling us who Arya is? Where are the dwarves? Why isn't Arya an elf? Why did Saphira suddenly grow up? That was lame ... there are too many faults to list...

I first watched the movie and kind of liked it, so I read the book an year or so later, and then re-watched the movie. It was like watching a completely different movie >_>

The Hunger Games Trilogy is one of the best books I have read lately.

ruraine

Mmmm good books ^________^

I do not recommend the HP series or Twilight series to anyone who values logical reasoning and good character development. Or to anyone who can't stand moody angsty characters.

What I do recommend include:
-The Troy Game, a 4-part series by Sara Douglass was an amazing read. Kept getting tricked by her =.="
-Eon by Alison Goodman was decent--though sometimes I felt like kicking the main character.
-Any of L.E. Modesitt's books--try the Magic Engineer in tandem with Colours of Chaos (if I'm not mistaken), both from the 16-part Saga of Recluce. That is an infinitely great combo.
-Any of Trudi Canavan's books--have read them all with enjoyment.

I love reading books, it is probably my favorite thing to do. I have read so many good books I can't remember their names. But a series that I read recently that I thought was good are the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare.
As for Twilight & HP I didn't really like HP because some of the characters annoyed me but overall I thought it was an ok book. And Twilight I think the plot was interesting but I didn't like how Stephanie Meyer's wrote it.

ruraine

Omg Michelle! You read the Mortal Instruments series too? :D I finished book two a few months ago, but haven't gotten around to book three yet. (Either that or I read book three because I couldn't get my hands on book two... whatever).

Really excited about how the plot is developing, and how relationships will work out. Have you finished the series?

As for HP.. that had one of the worst endings ever. I like ranting about the series as a whole but don't want to offend anyone so I'll shut up =/

and the hunger games are great too, but the 3rd book isn't out it in german yet...  :noway:

I don't know those books. I have however Read the Night Angel trilogy. LOVED THEM! Read the second and third in a day. The Eragon series is good although the second book was too..... well boring. SO MUCH TRAINING AND EXPLANATION. Third was great and I'm dying waiting for the 4th. Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer is an awesome series or the Keys to the Kingdom by Garth Nix. Although I think my favourite author is Michael Crichton. He came up with Jurassic park which was just fantastic, both the books and the movies.
There's no such thing as a bad idea... Just poorly executed awesome ones.

you loved the Night Angel Triology? then you have to read The Name of the Wind! :D and you're right, the 2nd book is so boring  but I liked the ending, so shocking ^.^ and don't know the other books you mention.

._. i wanted to read it... but it seemed really long.

disturby don't like to read sequels. I read them unless i've been scammed/conned unwittingly into reading the first book (which always happens -> me goes  :donwan: :donwan: :donwan: -> because me is too naive (always tricked by the author's storyline)

Well ummm let's see, I've read Twilight and loved the books (the movies didn't do them justice -_- .)

Currently I just finished reading the 10th book in the Sookie Stackhouse series!  Really great series that has been made into the TV series True Blood.  Again, the books are much better and quite a bit different but I still watch for the sexy actor who plays Eric

I highly recommend it if you liked Twilight because it's kind of like the next step up, a more mature, adult vampire series lol One of the cool points is that in the books, it's been 2 yrs or so since Vampires have "come out of the coffin" and told the rest of the world that they exist!  Lots of action & love ensue <3  I also love that the female main character is NOT a crybaby like they tend to be in these types of stories and she really grows throughout the books  ^_^

And, of course, the men make you want to say "Bite ME please!!!"   :shy:  lol
PR Projects:
Black Bird    Galism    Shiritsu!BJK    NtoH     Butterfly in the Air     Cosplay Deka     Yakusoku no Basho     Men's Kou

Mizuiro

Well if your going to put in twilight, I'm going to put in Harry Potter. The twilight story wasn't bad, just the actual writing of it. Well all of the books weren't the best until eclipse. That was the really only decent one.

@Mizi; I DISAGREE WITH YA. I felt that eclipse was just a pure continuation of the sequel and nothing more... It wasn't a decent read... the first was great... the second a bit dreggy... eclipse slightly boring ... then only breaking dawn fufilled my expectations -> BECAUSE OF THE RENESEMEE. (: If only the script of Midnight Sun wasn't leaked... i downloaded the draft of Midnight Sun - ZOMG. ITS WAY BETTER BECAUSE OF ALL THE VAMPIRE ACTIONS&SENSES ^_^ bree tanner wasn't bad too.

@Honey agree that the movies didn't do them justice.
I like reading. I love manga. I love good things(:

Hmm... Breaking dawn would have been better if it didn't drag on for ever. If it wouldn't have dragged on, it would have been somewhat decent. But eclipse is still my fav. I don't know why. It just is. And is Midnight sun worth reading?
"I AM a ninja." "No you're not." "Did you just see that?" "See what?" "My point exactly."

icewing

uh....i wouldn't read it cuz i kinda hate twilight now. it's just average. i guess

it was based loosely on the first book... you know... first book POV was all Bella... for midnight sun its Edward...so the book discloses stuff like info on the Cullens and how Edward felt about bella - things that were later mentioned in the first book but not that obvious
