I wonder if the Webreader may be contributing to the problem? In the sense that people aren't downloading releases as much, I mean. I'm not suggesting we shut it down or anything...I don't think my poor heart could stand knowing the days I spent getting it up and running were for naught...  :whaat: ...but if it's for the good of the group...

And don't forget about libraries...

I've found that sometimes I get more out of the scanlated versions than I do the official versions.  Not to mention that "official" doesn't mean "perfect."  I just read Tokyopop's "Corrector Yui" and I was a bit disappointed.  In the first volume, the page that listed upcoming volume titles had many errors: spelling, capitalization, even the wrong word!  Then, there were at least TWO pages they forgot to mirror-image (this was back when they still did that)!

Regarding the translator notes, some companies do some of those but they put them in the BACK of the volume!  And there usually (at least that I've seen) isn't any indicator to tell you it's there in the first place!

Lounge / Re: Leecher Comments
June 11, 2011, 22:09
Oh my gosh, I think I might have figured out why the leecher comments are increasing: it's summer break!  People have more time to read manga and surf the web and leave comments!  This is no excuse, of course, but it does allow for the hope that it won't last forever...

Another thing I was thinking about is that the news posts eventually disappear due to new posts, so we may need to have a little comment on the home page that stays there permanently.  Maybe on ALL the pages...

And I wonder how/if the amounts of annoying comments differ amongst scanlation groups...

@Lily- ROTFL!  You always know how to make me laugh away my troubles!  And you say the sweetest things!  Although I must admit that when I did the last update I wasn't trying to communicate screaming with the "Don't!"...it was more "Let's make sure they cannot POSSIBLY miss this!"  Regarding the misspellings in the comments, I wouldn't latch onto that because in most cases it is just shorthand and is perfectly acceptable.  You should see some of my text messages...you wouldn't believe a Grammar Nazi would do such a thing, but it's for the sake of saving time.

@Darselo- To be honest, I have often thought about doing updates like you are describing and although it is possible from a technical standpoint, it is not something I would be able to keep up with.  I have a hard enough time keeping my own records as Archivist updated and I have 3 chapters of Ardour I need to Pr (I actually haven't Pr'd in a good while...).  I also get the feeling that even if we did that it wouldn't stop the whining.  Plus there is a long explanation regarding the release process that would make such disclosure undesirable that I don't want to get into right now (sorry!).

I AM thinking about making a guide about what goes into scanlating a chapter and showing how hours add up quickly, but I don't think the whiners are going to read it...

The other problem with all this is that scanlation isn't my only hobby; I have MANY others!  That and I have a full time job this summer...

Well, I can tell you that there may be hope for the allergy aspect: I used to get bites that would become the size of baseballs (the actual raised bite itself, not the redness).  Now I've mostly grown out of it.

I would advise you to wear a jacket or jeans when you're going to be outside for a long time...especially in the evening and at night.

And you're going to kill me for this, but if we didn't have mosquitoes, there wouldn't be enough food for the spiders and bats [I <3 bats ^_^].  (That's another idea: build a bat house)

Now take poison ivy...THERE'S something I think the world wouldn't miss...

werr, fantastic job!  I am very impressed; there are very few people who can produce a story of this caliber even if their ONLY language is English!  This kind of thing is truly something that only needs to be proofread and not "translated" further.

I envy all the multi-linguists here...I am not good with other languages.  I guess that's why I just have to be extra knowledgeable of my own language...!

And English is such an irritatingly complex, nonsensical language...the sentence "These are we." is actually grammatically correct!!!

Wow, I'm still the only one who has started any topics in this forum section!  :=X:  Regardless...

This is the "Good Job!" thread.  Here we sing the praises of each others' achievements and show that we care.

Rules:
1- Obviously, no flaming/trolling/etc.  We build each other up here; we don't tear them down [even in jest].
2- You may either post an achievement of someone else that you think deserves recognition
    OR
You may post something big you've done that you want to tell the whole Transcendence kingdom!
3- Use common sense: If what you are going to say could be misinterpreted, you probably should clarify or not post it.  No hurt feelings in here!!

Congrats to our translator Xiaowu: she has just finished translating Fantastic Tales!  In total, Xiaowu has translated approximately 15 chapters for Transcendence!  On a personal note, I couldn't ask for a better partner working with me on Ardour ;)

Fanfiction / What I Wish I Could Tell You
August 25, 2009, 22:32
This isn't a story like last time, because I honestly don't write many stories  :haix:  But I want to share my writing, so here's what I did: I took a journal thing I wrote and "fictionalized" it enough to post it here.  The background of this: I've never actually been asked out to anything  and I'm a sophomore in college.  I wrote this during one of my frustrated moments; I'm happy to say I'm quite content to be single now!  :goodmood:

Please don't hesitate to speak your mind!

And so, I present an abridged version of "What I Wish I Could Tell You:"

There are so many things I wish I could tell you, but I am afraid to hurt our friendship in any way.
I wish I could tell you how great of a friend you are to me.
I wish I could tell you that I enjoy just being with you, silently, even if I have to sit on the hard floor.
I wish I could tell you why I sit on the floor and not the couch: to be closer to you.
I wish I could tell you how much I adore listening to you play your guitar, how wonderful that is.
I wish I could tell you how I miss you when you are away and hate when I don't see you much.
I wish I could tell you I like your sense of humor and can identify you by your laugh.
I wish I could tell you I enjoy how much we have in common; how much we are alike.

I wish I could tell you that the dorm event with you was probably the greatest night of my life and how comfortable I felt holding your hand.
I wish I could tell you I want to spend time with you whenever I can, but fear becoming a nuisance.
I wish I could tell you I think about you a lot and pray for you, too.
I wish I could tell you how much more I worry about my incomplete social skills when I am with you than any of my girl friends.

I wish I could tell you how much I want to sit next to you or just watch you do whatever it is you're doing.
I wish I could tell you how I wish I knew what you are thinking.
I wish I could tell you how much effort I've put into not falling for you.
I wish I could tell you that I've fully succeeded; but I would be lying.
I wish I could tell you how much I wish that I'd gotten to know you sooner.
I wish I could tell you that even now I fret about what to do, how to act, and what to say.

I wish I could tell you how, despite my efforts, I can see myself by your side for the rest of my life.
I wish I could tell you I hope beyond hope that you will visit or that I come to mind when I'm not around.
I wish I could tell you that I want us to be such good friends that I can lay my head on your shoulder when we're watching a movie.
I wish I could tell you that seeing you smile brings a smile to my face, too.
I wish I could tell you that I sometimes wish you had fewer friends so you would hang out with me more often.
I wish I could tell you that I care about you so much, despite what I may sometimes wish, I just want you to be happy; even if that doesn't include me.

Perhaps Xye, nancy and Kiriane could be the matriarchs; Xye being the eldest [head of the household] and nancy and Kiriane being her younger sisters.  then branch off according to the series they are in charge of, and so on.  Maybe we'll all be more of 'adopted apprentices' than offspring... ;)  Generations could be determined by the date each staff member joined.  [random example: Max and Mithril would both be 'older' then me]

in summary:
Xye-nancy-Kiriane
Xye's projects-nancy's projects-Kiriane's projects
staff of those projects [or each project could be a generation [inc. Zero Count]]

if only there were a paid position in the world to solve these kinds of puzzles...

For the sake of furthering my knowledge of the coloring industry/art/whatever, I must ask if the white strands in the hair were intentional?

Not really, but the purpose of a color palette [for me, anyway] is to show what colors I'll be using and check for any color clashes.  It keeps all of the colors in one place so I can go back to get them in photoshop easily when I'm switching colors.  It'll end up looking something like my avatar when it's done.  Does that help?

*slaps werr with a fish*

Now I don't want to hear that kind of talk!  I have the same problem.  Here's what helps me :bingo:: I write EVERYTHING down; it could be a sentence structure, a plot twist, a character description, funny quip...you should see the margins of my class notes or random pages in my notebook!  :=X:  I never sit down and start writing a story.  I sit and gather all my notes and make them legible; then it's as easy as cut and paste!  Once everything's in order, go back and start connecting the dots.  When you get stuck on something, write a little note to yourself so you won't forget.  Leave it alone every so often and come back fresh; it works wonders!

I dread the blank sheet in front of me, so I fill it up and it's not so intimidating.  Then I can edit to my heart's content [which is what I need to do with this one]!  And I use the notes thing for everything!  It's gotten to the point where I can't go anywhere without something to write on; and I'm usually found with a pencil stuck in my ponytail, lol.  I even jot down things like a genre I've been meaning to read or something to look up.

So don't tell me you can't or you'll get smacked upside the head with a fish again!  :wahaha:  Feeeeesh! [idk where that came from...]

Awww, thanks Kiriane!  :shy:

I don't have as many cousins as you guys do, and all of the ones on my mom's side are way older.

Max, I [almost] totally know how you feel except that my brother is younger and I'm the one with the better grades [ha! jk] [oh, and let's hear it for the stage crew!!! w00t!]

I'd also like to throw out that relationships can [and will] change; often for the better.  Being away at university has made it a trillion times easier to cope with my younger sibs' idiosyncrasies. I know it sounds crazy, but when you're not around them 24/7, you may develop the patience of a saint when you do see them.   The "sib clash" is the age old paradox that will never be solved!  :donwan:

I agree with Xye.  I think there was something said about her blood being the most compatible?  Perhaps he was a baby because he hadn't had a "mother" for a few days and was weak...

The 10 years, I thought, referred to the time it took for him to return to "normal"; but that's just how I interpreted it...

@Tammy- you're welcome!  I often get a good start on a project and then leave it alone for a good while.  When I come back, I have a fresh perspective to get me over any bumps!  And it's okay to be better at poems than long stories.  We each have our strength so as to contribute a variety of styles!  To be honest, I'm not very good at long stories, either.  My writing is generally concise, so it's hard to "flesh it out", so to speak.  I hate when teachers say "answer this in 5-6 sentences."  I can get the same amount of info in 3! Tammy, that was great!  Your word choice and imagery are beautiful.

The only thing I can critique would be the end.  IMHO, I think that the heart of stone should've been mentioned by name.  [You hint at it with the "easy to tear"] And "scar" I think is a bit to closely related to "mends;" perhaps a word switch?

I just finished "Full Metal Panic!" and greatly enjoyed it.  The jump in violence and nudity in "The Second Raid" was really surprising compared to the first two seasons...

A Fluffy for Jas

She stood alone watching the weather report on the television about the wind storm, wringing her hands in anxiety.  The information was anything but encouraging: random jargon and complex charts that no one really understood.  She had been praying non-stop since the storm had suddenly risen without warning.  She had grown up with the tornadoes and high winds, and they had never fazed her.  She was overwhelmingly afraid of them for the first time.  She now had more cause to worry.  He was still out there; driving, of all things!  She knew there was no way her significant other could have known, none of them could, but she worried just the same.

The noise around her was causing her head to pound and the wind echoing outside the emergency shelter put her more and more on edge.  The light tug on her hair was...wait, huh?...Great.  Now I'm imagining things.  She checked the forecast yet again, not really expecting anything, and put her head in her hands.  "Please, let him be alright," she murmured.

There was another yank on her hair and this time she knew it wasn't her imagination.  The kids in the shelter have been restless for a while now, she thought.  This must be an attempt to get a reaction from me to entertain them.  She decided to beat them at their own game and not give them the satisfaction of a reaction of any kind.  Normally, she would be the first to whip around and surprise the kids and laugh with them.  It was one of their favorite things to do together.  She dropped back into her worries again.  If he hadn't gone, she thought miserably, we would probably be doing that now.

"That idiot," she said aloud.  "If anything happens to him, I'll..." She stopped and began to tremble.

"You'll what?"  There was a voice behind her that she knew, but in her distress she couldn't make the connection instantaneously like she usually did.  "What will you do to me?"  As he spoke, it clicked.

She turned and nearly collapsed when she saw him.  He was standing there with the familiar sheepish grin that made her melt.  She gave him a quick once-over to assess the expected damage.  His jeans and gray hooded sweatshirt were disheveled, but there were no holes or rips to suggest a fall.  His baseball cap was covering extremely windswept hair.  She guessed he had had it in the backpack that was slung over his right shoulder.  No serious injuries if he could handle that load.  He was standing easily in his favorite Nike tennis shoes, which were untied.  That eliminated major leg problems.  His hands were occupied holding the backpack strap on his right and his jeans' pocket on the left.  She breathed a sigh of relief; he wasn't holding them like he would to cover a wound.  This complete and thorough assessment took two seconds at most.  She threw her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly.

"I'm so glad you're alright!" she cried. "Don't scare me like that; I was so worried!"  He brought his arms around her, and they embraced tightly in relief for an extended time.  She waited to be released; not that she minded it, it was just odd for him to show this kind of affection.  He gave her much affection, but he usually gave it in small amounts; he was shy and didn't express his emotions like this.

"Are you going to let go of me?"  she teased.

"No." The reply was so swift and definite it startled her.  She'd expected one of two responses: a flustered "Oh! S-sorry." or a playful "Mmmmmmm...no."

"I can't let go of you again."  She chuckled nervously, her heart pounding.  This wasn't normal, so what...of course!  He must be really playing up their normal banter.

"Don't you think that's a little extreme?" she said, playing along.

"No."  She froze; he was really convincing. But that intensity...doubt started to infiltrate.

"And why is that?" she asked in a normal tone.  She felt him stiffen, and then shake ever so slightly.  At that moment, she knew: this sure as heck wasn't acting.  She heard him take a deep breath and say,

"Because I..."  A few seconds passed and the only sound was of the background variety.  She had never seen him like this.

She leaned back so she could see his face, which he was hiding well in the shadow of the baseball hat's bill.  He loosened his grip, slightly, but did not let go.  Gently, she brought her hand to his face.

"Why?" she repeated softly and guided him to look her in the eyes.  He couldn't meet her gaze; his face flushed and he bit his lip.   Then he slowly lowered his head and whispered in her ear,

"Because I love you."  She was stunned: he used the L-word.  When they started dating, they had decided to not use the L-word unless they were absolutely certain they truly meant it.  It had lost its meaning in today's world because it was over-used.

"Why today? Why not yesterday or tomorrow?"

"Because yesterday is gone and tomorrow isn't guaranteed."

"You know that's not what I meant.  What's different about today?"

Taking a deep breath, he straightened up and, with steely determination, he locked his eyes on hers.

"Because," he said, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, "you have been the only thing in my mind since this storm started.  When the storm hit and the weather reports talked about the worst of it being here, and I turned around and went straight back the way I had come. The entire time I could only think of you. People usually have fleeting thoughts keeping them aware of their surroundings and actions.  I can't remember anything that happened during that time.  I wasn't aware of anything else until I saw you.  All I could think was I have to..."  He faltered for a moment, then, slowly bringing her closer, "...protect her."

She was engulfed in another tight hug while she was momentarily speechless.  She wasn't really surprised by his words; it was just that she couldn't believe that the joking, carefree, quiet guy she had come to adore and the strong, open, passionate man holding her now were one and the same.  She never doubted his emotions, but this was the first time he had ever...done something like this!  His words were usually few and he'd never held her as if he might never see her again.  Her thoughts were interrupted by a kiss.

Suddenly, the howling winds that had caused her so much anxiety soothed her like a light breeze.  She was grateful for the storm, because it had created the scene in which her knight could go above and beyond to show his love.

"I love you, too," she said quietly.  She had a feeling that things were going to be better than ever after the storm.  No, things were incredible now because of the storm.  The destructive, feared, and powerful force of nature had done something unexpected of it: amongst its violent winds, it had brought true love.

The End

Don't get me wrong, I love my sibs as much as the next person, but sometimes I just want to strangle them!!  >:(  I know all of us with siblings feel this way, so here is the place to let it all out.  Tell the story of his latest snide remark or her trespassing...we can all take your side and make you feel better! ;)

Here, I'll even start us off:
Siblings always ask to borrow things; it's part of life.  I am generally pretty good about it, but my brother always ends up putting his foot in his mouth [actually, I wish he would; then he couldn't say anything!] and gets the answer he doesn't want.  For example: he asks to borrow something,  and I tell him that I'd rather he didn't.  At this point, the smart thing to do would be to shut up, but no one ever accused my brother of being smart, so he keeps pleading his case.  Eventually, I get fed up and give him an outright 'no,' and...let's just say hell breaking loose would be prettier...  Seriously, if he'd shut up in the first place, I may have given in, but now there's no way I'm saying yes!  Ring a bell with anyone?

It's as simple as that!  Oh, and typing in caps is allowed...just use it in moderation, please ;)
