Final Exam
Reading and Assignments
Read Chapter 7 Sousa – Putting It All Together

Due Dec. 6 midnight

100 points

Your final assignment for EDUC 250 is to explain: How the Brain Learns to Read?  Include the 5 components of Reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary). See the rubric for grading details. Create a Smore, Glogster or a Powerpoint worth 100 points. A Smore is a flyer you create using the Internet at smore.com. A glogster is a poster that you can create using the Internet. It is really fun to make and has really colorful graphics. You can even add you voice and videos from YouTube. To create a glog go to glogster.com or to create a smore go to smore.com. You can view my glog and smore that I created by coping and pasting the following link in your browser.

http://www.glogster.com/streckerb/read-aloud/g-6m6ekahs3ipvkn6h3es96a0?s=imgglog

https://www.smore.com/a5np

Note: To create a smore or gloster you have to register for an account. However, it is FREE. They do have an upgraded version that you can purchase, but that is not necessary. The free account will meet your needs. All you have to do is provide your ECSU email or personal email account.

This entire semester has been devoted to learning how children learn to read. So use the Sousa text to guide your work. Begin with what you have learned this semester; learning to read starts with the spoken language and end with comprehension.

Follow the process from start (spoken word) to comprehension. Please incorporate the alphabetic principle, the five components of reading, syntax, working memory, long term memory, and semantics.  Do not include technical terms such as Wernicke's area, Broca's area, and lobes of the brain.

The final is simple assignment, don't make it harder than it is. Use the attached rubric to assist you in developing the assignment. Your assignment is to explain how children learn to read.

You need to post the link to your glog, smore or the attachment of your Powerpoint by Dec 6. If using smore or glogster, copy and paste your link to a word documents and upload the document to bb.

Good luck and have fun constructing your own knowledge!

It seems like she just wants you to explain how kids learn to read... I just underlined the bits that seemed like the important ones. Make a powerpoint about it from the beginning of the process to the end.

I hope that helped... :swt:

she said that is was going to be easy and it was not going to take long, but if you do what she says then you are going to have a powerpoint with 50 slides or more, so i dont know what she is look for and she will not email me back and answer my questions.

I don't understand what you mean by 'if you do what she says then you are going to have a powerpoint with 50 slides or more'...

The part that you underlined if you have all of that and explain it in a powerpoint it is going to be 50 slides or more b/c you have to start when the child is a baby and learns the speech and finish when they understand what they are reading.

That's part of the challenge of making a good presentation. Pick out the important parts, summarize other parts, get just the necessary information. A poster/powerpoint shouldn't be paragraphs, it should be bullet points.

Getting the right depth and level of information is an important skill, but it can be very difficult. How would you explain how a kid learns to read to a person who knows nothing about child development and only has 10 minutes?

Jess

That is where I am having my troubles with I know I am going to do a powerpoint, but to get all the information in a few slides is kind of hard

I looked at your powerpoint, and here are my notes:

  • Powerpoint presentations should be like outlines.  No paragraphs (and you have mostly those), but short quick notes segmented into points and subpoints.  Longer than this makes it hard to stay focused.
  • Your teacher said to avoid bigger words, and I noticed a couple.  Try to word it more simply and easier for someone not familiar with this topic to understand.

I am not doing a presentation I am turning it in to my teacher as is, so I can not do the Powerpoint like I normally to it because no one will get it.

What big words are you talking about? because I thought I use low grade level words.

A powerpoint file is called a powerpoint presentation, whether or not you actually present it!  :bingo:

Words like "phoneme" and "automaticity" (although the latter is showing up in my browser as being spelled incorrectly.

Also, on page 3 you have "The average child needs between four and 14 exposures to automatically the recognition of a new word" which should be "automatically recognize."  Make double sure your grammar and spelling are correct - you're going to be a teacher, so it looks bad if you can't even get it yourself.

Well how do explain, something about how a child learns something in one or two words then?

Some of the words like phoneme, phonic, and so on I have to have because they are on her list of things to talk about.

True, but even if I make a 100 on this exam I am going to fell this class

Ok, if you have to use those words, then use them.  Don't be so negative! You still need to do the best you can, or failure is VERY certain.  You said you feel like current teachers just halfass everything and view teaching negatively, so you have to be sure to put forth all your effort and positive energy into it!

I do this teacher just hates me for some reason

Plus, I worked on this Powerpoint for 2 weeks and my teacher said that this was something easy

Well considering you didn't need to do any research because she told you where to get the information, it seems pretty easy to me.  You pretty much just had to look where she told you and quote.

Jess

Well it wasn't in chapter 7 of that book, but yea you have to be a mind reader with this women

Can someone proofread this for me?

I think I got on my grammar mistakes, misspelled words, etc., but I am not sure.

Page 2:
- Add an s after "recognize" so that it's "recognizes."
- Add a period at the end of the sentence.

Page 4:
- 1st bullet point: change "to automatically recognition of a new word" to "to automatically recognize a new word."

well I missed two things so I am not going to get that 100 I wanted for a grade

You missed 3 things.  So you should get a 97.  :goodjob:   Still an A+ anywhere in the country.

I got an 85 she said that I did not do the exam right. So, since I am not a mind reader, and I did not do what she was looking for I am getting a lower grade for it.
