I love reading stuff from the 70s and 60s. My favorite writers are Keiko Takemiya (To Terra) and Leiji Matsumoto (Galaxy Express 999 and Interstella 5555). Does anyone read stuff by the Year 24 Group, Leiji Matsumoto, or Omasu Tezuka? Do you read anything from before 1980? Whose your favorite writer from this period in manga history?

I like old manga, because of the style of the stories, but I find the art rather ugly(?). If only the art was better, there are some really good old mangas.

Nozomi

The oldest manga i read is Bara no tameni (so good! so good! *0*) but i just checked and it was first published in 1992 so i gues is not that old ;P
but when i try to read old manga (i have tried) the art just makes me :S , i don't think is ugly, just weird xD

The oldest I've read was "From Far Away" by Kyoko Hikawa, but it's also from 1993~2003. So, it's not so old. Can't image what manga from 60s looks like O.O *tries to imagine* Nah, I can't  :swt:

Hmm, for the old manga -- the art work.. well -- I find it pretty ugly. That's compared to the artwork nowadays. I've still read quite a few.
One moment of patience may ward off great disaster...

Agreed.

I can't bear the new manga's drawings !! They're awful, all similar -_-"

I love the old drawings kinds !!! Such as La rose de Versailles, Lady Georgie,Gunm, Albator, (don't know the English title. Captain smthg...) etc

Well of course, my favorite ones are the drawings like those from SDK, Hikaru no go, Dance !! Subaru, ...

Ahh, I've tried Glass Mask, but the drawing style is a bit too much for me - especially since the series is soooo long!

Mmm, I've also read Chizumi to Fujiomi. It's not bad; short, pretty sweet and very shoujo-esque. I've also read Thomas' Heart by Hagio Moto. I liked it, but I also disliked it because of the ending which was ultimately a very logical and fitting ending, but well... haha. ;;;;

Mmm, Rose of Versailles is a classic, and I can see why! And I've read a bit of Sazae-san too. This kind of nichijou manga is pretty relaxing to read and makes you notice things in your life you've not seen before.

In short, I don't mind old mangas, but I think the ones from the 70s are a little hard for me to emphasise with, character-wise. I don't feel so unhappy at their pain, and their triumphs don't make me as excited as I usually am. But I felt that they were worth reading, all in all. ;>

For me it depends on the story and how it was scanned...
Often times, the grammar is so bad I have a fit and can't read it anymore  :noway:
Other times, I just hate the story.

But I like the old art because as Ordog said, modern art can be really similar (sometimes good and bad) and it can be really beautiful without being too complicated or blinding.

Er can't think of others but one I did like but couldn't get around to finishing is Ouke no Monshou (Daughter of the Nile)

Ahh, I read a bit of Akatsuki no Aria just the other day - it is a recent(-ish) manga, but the pacing, storyline and character types is quite similar to the ones that you may find in the old shoujo. It's still serialising too! It's not bad, I sort of like it; but I just thought it was interesting how you can still find manga that resemble the retro ones even today. ;>
