My first series was I"S.  I was skimming a relatively small manga site and settled on it for some reason.  And the rest is history!

My first anime was Sailor Moon -_-;; I was very very small. And I didn't even know what it was. I only watched it because I thought all the girl characters look kind of like Barbie :=X:

My first manga was either Fruits Basket or Bleach. I don't remember, lol. XD

nancy

Mine was.....hana-kimi I believe. I feel so bad for Nakatsuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!! T.T (I love his character/actor in both the chinese/japanese dramas!!!)
I hate losing. I hate crying. I want to keep laughing.

Shiki

The very first manga that I read was Dragon Ball (lol). After that it was Love Hina and Chobits! At that time I was still a newbie in the manga world (teehehehehehe).

My story (you can skip if you want to =P) :

When I was like in grade 4 almost everyday after school my friends and I will go to the library close to the school (and my house) to do our homework together! One of my friend was already hooked in Manga and he told me about it. Surprisingly there were 2 series in the library, Dragon Ball and Love Hina. So I started reading them! Then my friend asked the librarian if we can suggest a manga to the library and they said yes... and that's how Chobits came. LOL

so i discovered there was a wonderful thing called manga 9w9
i read it and didn't get a thing xDD no one told me you read it right to left ¬¬U
Then, i read trc (this time i read it properly) the manga i love until now <3

Evory

I watched pokemon and digimon as a kid (didn't know it was anime though). There is a story as to how I learned about the wonderful world of manga&anime:

*ahem*

Once upon a time (actually a bit more then a year ago), my brother was looking for some song on youtube. It had footage of the anime of DNAngel in it. He thought it looked funny, and looked up what it was, and started watching the anime. I happened to be in the same room, when I heard some weird sounds (I never heard Japanese before >.<) coming out of his laptop. I got curious, and watched a few episodes with him (I didn't really get it at the time XD). He got bored with it though, and continued his life. So I looked it up myself, and watched the entire series, and was very disappointed when there were only 26 episodes. I read through the comments and... *dun dun dun* I learned that something like 'manga' existed, with a handy-dandy link provided to mangafox. After that, I realized there were also other manga&anime. and a new manga&anime fan was born. And I lived happily ever after. Probably.

The first anime I watched was Dragon Ball (on TV each morning, some years ago...)
And the first manga was Naruto >.<

Criss

I don't really remember my first manga, it should either be Fruits Basket or Detective conan...

My first anime was naruto.

Xye

Shiki

I forgot to mention my first animes!

My first anime was Pokemon! I used to like it a lot! Seriously, I had toys of them back in China~! Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, and Detective Conan <3 are also part of "the first time" list!

Privilege is the greatest enemy of right.

Kai

... Bleach, the anime.  :=X: My brother was watching it because a friend recommended it. And then I got curious.

As for manga, it was Kekkaishi. Well, first I looked at someone's Fruits Basket in Japanese class, but I didn't really read it, so I don't know if it gets credited.

Lena G

If about anime, that would be... hehe, "Pokemon" of course xD As most of us, I didn't even knew it was called anime. Oh wait! There's a memory flash in my head :O Actually, I remember when I was very tiny I watched something that resembled anime o(O.O)o I liked the drawing but unfortunately I have no idea what anime was that.
I don't remember my first manga eather T.T It happened just a year ago, when I picked up my first manga tho. Dang, my memory is soooo bad >.<

Xiaowu

my first ever manga was Magic Knight Rayearth, and i think my first anime was cardcaptor sakura?

Oh gosh. Of course, back when I was a kid -- I called any anime on TV a cartoon (: My first anime was Sailor Moon  :swt:

First manga was a couple years back. I had a couple (VERY GOOD) artist friends. One of them lent me a Fruits Basket manga volume when I was showing some interest. Instantly fell in love with manga (and pretty pictures)  :shy:

#20
the first few for me was a blur because i was like 5? and then even after that i didn't know what animes were til...naruto, i called them cartoons. the list goes in respective order (that i could best possibly can think of)
DragonBall series (starting with DragonBall, of course) Pokemon, sailor moon (i was 6 or 7 then and thought the girls were pretty  :=X:) Yu-Gi-Oh...then around age 10, I saw an anime called Spirited Away, i was like, "THEY NEED AN AWARD FOR THIS!" Then possibly Naruto then Bleach, can't remember anymore even though i'm sure I have more

chels

first manga i read was vampire knight, thats how i even found out what manga are. the art was so beautiful i couldnt put it down. all this time later and im still readin it. and it keeps gettin more pretty.

Michelle

My first anime was Peach Girl, I saw it being advertised on youtube so I decided to watch it and it wasn't that great, a lot of things were annoying but I cried so much watching it and it was drama-filled. Then I went on MAL and I wanted to find something similar to it and I found Bokura ga Ita which is my favorite manga. Then, I got hooked.

Furgeson

I LOVE THIS QUESTION!

My first submersion into this shit was of course... SAILOR MOON!
I mean, who doesn't love the girl with meatballs fighting by moonlight? XD

After the seven year hiatus, I think that the first thing I ever picked up was bleach.
Or else OURAN...  :goodjob:

Don't you get so attached to these "gateway" things?
Not that I'm suggesting addiction or anything...
But I LOVE CAKE!
And my first cake inciident was one I was three...
So. Well, yup. It's definitely stayed with me.

charmy

Hikaru no Go. it was godly. the best i've ever read so far. :D well. maybe cause i was all young and new to the manga world that it seemed so exciting and interesting. hahaha. but i loved it. (:

Animus

First manga was Sailor Moon. It was so popular in Taiwan then, haha. :P The first manga I read in English was Naruto I think. And that was last year.

First anime was... Pokemon? But I didn't find it THAT interesting. The anime that got me hooked was Bleach though I don't watch that anymore. :D

Dia

my first anie was Sailor Moon! I was soooo little... and my first manga was also Sailor moon ^^ what can I say? I wanted to be a salior scouttttttttt!!  :wahaha:

Furgeson

Wow,
Dia and Animus,
we have a connection here.
That experience is so similar to mine, it's worrisome XD
(except for the fact that I don't live in Taiwan...)

Dia

great!! but... I don't live in Taiwan either! lol! ... Indeed I don't live in an Asian Country, I'm from Argentina..  *skip

Sharwin

I got into anime really early (loldubs), but I didn't get into manga for a while... My first series was either Prince of Tennis or Naruto... I can't actually remember which one.

Furgeson

Oooh...
Hello Sharwin. I can't believe it didn't occur to me
earlier that you're the one in the anime chat (in the chat box. Obvi.)
Even with you're name right there...
Well, manga's more my thing. Pwash. I guess it's a girl thing. With me and my shoujo
and crap and my creepy shitz that I prefer to read
b/c I can't handle horror anime---  :vomit:

Sharwin

No, I only got into it early because I use to watch like Sailormoon, Dragon Ball, Pokemon and all that stuff on YTV (when I was young). This is before I ever got into manga or anything. Then again in High School a bunch of my girl friends I knew were really into Naruto and Prince of Tennis (always fantasizing about some sort of yaoi couples >_>) and that's when I started to pick up Naruto and Prince of Tennis as well. About that same time I started getting into manga and anime pretty heavily. But I stopped for a while and got sucked into WoW for a great deal of time.

Then near the middle of university I started to pick up massively into anime, catching up on a lot of old series, and now I'm a pretty heavy manga reader. The probably biggest reason I don't watch anime as much is that seemingly a huge majority of anime that comes out I've read the manga or parts of it and therefore aren't really interested in the anime. And of course that 90% of the the series coming out are actually garbage >_<...

I also prefer manga cause it just feels more accessible haha and it sure doesn't take up a ton of space on my harddrives. I'm the type that doesn't like to delete the anime I download xD.

Reason I tend to not read shoujo is I like darker themes, and generally more represented in seinen. Plus... a large majority of shoujo art is a turn off for me :S

Furgeson

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
Despite the fact that I agree to disagree,
The art in anime is a serious baddie for me. I like the beauty I find in manga,
though I'm picky about it. Manga is something that I can savor more,
b/c I can read it at any pace I want. Anime is slow and hard to fast foward... XD
Shounen anime LIVES to be mocked and yaoi-ized...  :shy:

Where do you download anime off of?
I was raised with that stuff when I was young too,
and it's stuck, but just not that well, I suppose?
Pwash! ME LOVE you second paragraph- i agree. A lot of anime is worse than the manga,
just like books are mostly better than the movies. B/c you have expectations before you start to watch it.
And then there are those pointless shows that I cry at the prospect of.

I swear, you could right a book on the pros and cons of manga vs. anime...   :hmmm:
No, I'm serious.

Sharwin

When I pick manga, I look for very interesting characters that involve a ton of development and interesting worlds. Normally, I've found the characters that interest me more in shounen/seinen. Though I still read a decent amount of shoujo I guess. When you've at least looked through almost 600 some series, even if only 10% are shoujo, that's still quite a bit xD...

The anime I tend to watch or like happens to be more based on novels or original works. Most ones based on novels I haven't read so they are fresh for me, or actual original works which are usually pretty cool.

Sometimes the other problem with lots of new anime is they are based on relative new manga. So I look at it and it's like... it's only two volumes into the manga. So you know it'll have to change or have no real ending -_-; And then of course you have those were like omg the manga is so bad, why is this an anime D;...

As for anime usually I look at which groups are doing the subs. So I take a look at AniDB which has a good listing of the subs doing each series. Then I typically search it up on Tokyo Toshokan (like a torrent tracker). If it's not there I tend to go to the groups website itself to see if I can find the torrent.

Anime done well can be really good. I am currently really impressed by Kara no Kyoukai. Especially when they deliver on animation, music, plot and character. Though what tends to happen is you get all the ecchi manga turned into anime because apparently that is what sells in Japan... So unless you want to fly to Japan and start buying a billion copies of your favourite anime, it's not going to change anytime soon xD...

If you are wondering what type of characters/types I look for hmm... I'll list some of the shoujo/josei that I've enjoyed.

Renmei no Arcana
Tokage
Ame Nochi Hare
Goong
Shuukatsu!! - Kimi ni Naitei
Hanatsukihime

Maybe you've read some of them :P

werr

Whoa, everything that Sharwin said is exactly as I think. The best anime are the ones based off a novel or original works, because an incomplete ending is one of the things that bug me the most.

Ayaki

Mitsumegatooru was my first i guess.... Old Old manga.......... ????

or probably Doraemon. Doraemon is evergreen i guess  :=X:

-In Fate/Zero Fever OuO-

"To be forgotten is worse than death" -Freya [Final Fantasy IX]

Acire

I was  like O______O watching the anime for Rurouni Kenshin.  (POW!  BOOM!  CRASH!  AHHHHHHHHHHH!  oro?)
:o_o:

And then I heard there was a manga.

The rest is history.  ;D

Furgeson

Just like in movies.
Ridiculously long fight scenes
and then a mushy ending. O__o
*pokes Ayaki. YOUR SIGGIE IS HUUUUUGE!

hm. well, i wasn't exactly thrilled by "naruto" the name. it was actually an AMV.....O.O. yeah. Sasuke and Sakura. The only reason i started reading it was because,

I've read comic books since I was in high school, but didn't start reading mangas until last year, the first one being Fruits Basket.  What prompted the foray into manga was the abrupt, near-crappy ending of the FB anime.  Imagine my relief at finding the manga online.  After that, there was no turning back.

Card captor Sakura. God I loved it so much before.

I first started watching anime because of one of my sisters skimming through the channels YEARS ago. I don't know which was first; Fushigi Yuugi, some modern princess getting shot, Inyuyasha, Oh, My Goddess!, or other?

But, the first manga I'm sure of was Fushigi Yuugi. From there on, I fell in love with Yuu Watase's work (the guys are just so hot  :woohehe: ) and found other series on my library's shelves.
