working vs stay-at-home

what are your thoughts on parents working vs staying at home with the kids / grandparents?

`Roze`

Personally, if I could afford it, I would love to be a stay at home mom when I have kids. At least when they're little, but we wouldn't be able to afford it. So I say if you can afford it then do whatever you need to do! Though you have measure the cost of daycare vs the cost of working. I know some places around here you don't make enough at your job to justify doing daycare for your child.

My mom was a stay at home mom for about 2 or 3 years when my sister Lexi was born. When she got to be that age she started doing part time in the evening at a local bar as a bartender because she was old enough for me to look after for an hour or two while my dad finished up his shift at work.

I think a combination of the two would be the best solution to the dilemma. It's what my mom did, she worked part-time and got a babysitter during the days that she worked. However what Roze said, I agree, as you do need to consider the money it costs as opposed to the money you'll make.

@Angel: what do you mean "the money it costs as opposed to the money you'll make"?

---

at my current place, i think we get 16 weeks of maternity leave -- but i think that's all i'd want to take. i'm a bit of a workaholic so even if presented the option to be a stay-at-home mom, i don't think could ever take it xD

i wouldn't want to pull my hair out from spending literally all day with baby and not really having an escape. also i think it's too easy to get wrapped up in someone else's life so if i were a stay-at-home mom i'd just be a helicopter parent and have empty nest syndrome like crazy once my kid went off to college. i'm sure i'll love and cherish baby and whatnot but i need my own thing to do ;-;

probably just hire someone to watch after the baby if a family member couldn't do it during the day. then montessori/preschool. i should hit manager level by age 27 and i don't plan to have kids until i'm at least 31-32, so i'll be able to work remotely one day a week and have more flexible hours - maybe leave the office around 2-3pm to pick up my kid and then work from home the rest of the day?

haven't really thought details thru for that far ahead, i'm in no rush ^^;

#familyplanning. xDDD

I will try to follow the example that has told me.

Haha Nielle, that's a great plan!

I don't want to have kids until I finish college and have a stable job. I'm thinking 25ish will be a good age for me to have a child. xD I don't want to be TOO old once my kids get all grown up LOL.

If I'm still in the area I am now I have no idea what I'm going to do for daycare when I have kids. We literally do NOT have enough daycare providers around here! Especially those who will take children below the age of 4. A lot of the bigger companies here are even offering inscentives for those who start up a daycare! It's like 1k for start up costs or something like that. I've often thought about quitting school and starting a daycare but I don't have a large enough house to be able to do that. Maybe once I get into the country! (Though by then I'll probably already have my teaching degree so then what's the point!) Plus there's all kinds of crazy hoops you have to jump through when starting up a daycare. OTL

@Noomviry
I'm confused? What example are you following? And who has told you that?  ???

Nielle, sorry for the slow reply haha, been a bit busy with life. What I meant with what you make as opposed to what it will cost, I meant hiring a babysitter whilst working part-time, needing to balance costs vs income.
