quirk   [kwerk]   noun
  • A peculiar behavioural habit:    "his annoying quirks"
(dictionary.com)

You know how some people do certain things in a certain way, and they think they're the only one in the world who does it? Well, they're wrong because chances are, out of the billions out there, there's always someone as strange as you. :D
You are not alone. Let's hope not.

So... In an effort to get to know each other more, post a quirk! As many as you like. :) Just don't double post. Don't be afraid to share your weirdness. Embrace it!

One of my quirks is that if I happen to be eating chips while on the computer, I use chopsticks instead of my hands. It's easier. I don't have to get food all over my laptop and I don't have to keep wiping off my hands/washing 'em. I also get to work on my chopstick kung fu.

What are your strange quirks?

Is that the only way you can concentrate or...? o_o
Also, I'm curious but does that happen in school as well? Like if you have a study period or something?

If I don't listen to music while studying for school I forget half the things I read...I fluff rape my animals.  :=D:

I hate spicy things but I LOVE flaming hot cheetos.

I won't get on a boat unless it's my uncles boat.

I chew on my fingernails ~ like i play with the nail in my mouth after I've bitten it off.  :swt:

I won't touch a lawnmower with a ten foot pole.  :indotz:

Whenever I eat pickles I suck out the inside stuff and eat the skin last.

There's more but I can't think of them right now xD

LOL Roze.  Some of those are cutely gross.

I have severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and (thankfully mild) ADD.  So I have a LOT of quirks.  I'll just list a couple of the stranger ones...

1.) Since I lose focus on things quickly, I break everything I do into chunks and alternate them.  For instance, tonight, I'm washing small batches of dishes and alternating it with typesetting Migawari 16, reading manga, checking the forum, and doing other chores.  In rotation.

2.) I have a problem with many organic textures.  Some of them are:
- Things that remind me of worms or wiggle around (spaghetti, for instance)
- Anything squishy
- Bloated, smooth, or swollen things
- Raw meat and torn flesh
- This:

3.) I narrate everything I do and hold conversations in my head with people before those conversations happen (I plan out what we'll both say).  Also, if I plan to say something and don't get to, I'll keep repeating it in my head until I get it out.  This does indeed make me that annoying person who can't let conversations drop.  I hate that, but I can't do anything about it.  Sometimes writing it down helps.

4.) I have gerascophobia - the fear of old age.  I'm petrified of getting old and my body failing, and old people creep me out.  Touching old people's skin makes me feel gross.  My mom thinks this makes me a terrible person.

5.) I have anxiety disorder and agoraphobia and some days have trouble leaving the house.

6.) I am an empath - I feel other people's emotions as if they were my own.  THAT sure sucked during puberty...  I also read people's minds.  Not intentionally; I didn't even know I could do it until multiple boyfriends pointed it out.  BUT being able to know so much about everyone around me makes it difficult to be out in public places; hence #5.

Don't know if I could call these quirks but

1. Suddenly screaming in the bathroom for no apparent reason.

2. Head banging the wall

3. I usually study while sitting on the floor

4. Dat moment where your just staying still and then you suddenly do the macaroni dance or other schimemabob dances.

5. when theres a mirror behind me I tend to SLOWLY look at the back like some character in a horror movie that turns around to see if someones there then suddenly a creep or some scary monster appears.

Roze. xD That little nail chewing bit took it to new levels.

And whoa. New facts about Ver. That organic texture thing was super interesting.

@Pau
Do you mean the Macarena? I don't know what the Macaroni dance is but it sounds awesome. Also, I think you should start wearing a helmet and stop watching horror movies. o_o

Quirk: Counting things in the height of boredom, especially when I have to stay still for long periods of time. Be it floor tiles, cracks, leaves, spots, lines, sometimes even the bricks on a wall.
The most I've ever counted was 8,902 squares on a wallpaper. And that was pure counting.

Dang.  I've never counted anything that high and I have arithmomania (compulsive counting).  Steps, rocks, etc.  But then since I don't consciously do it, I end up starting over midway.  It would drive me nuts to actively count wallpaper squares!

- I stare at anything or anyone that looks interesting and trace the shapes in my mind.
- If I'm listening to music while I'm walking, I have to walk to the beat no matter how fast or slow it is. I've tried to not follow the beat but it's impossible for me.
- I make random noises when I get bored or it's too quiet.
- I call my dog "kitty"
- I bite things when I get bored or nervous. Pens, books, finger nails, my ipod, erasers, chopsticks, pretty much any thing.

@Jess
You're not going to post a quirk, Jess? :P

Quirks:
I...
1) tap out the seconds it takes for a person to reply with a finger/foot, especially when we're face to face. If they take too long, I start narrowing my eyes at them, hahaha.
2) must walk on the lines/cracks or on the tiles. Never on both. @.@

I do this too!! But...not pencils or fingernails, and not hard enough to break anything.  I've chewed on my cell phone, hair clips, pillows, blankets, my kid's head (just to tease her), and sometimes my husband comes in to find me gnawing on my desk.  He usually just cocks an eyebrow then backs out of the room.

I can't STAND to walk on lines or cracks.  I have to always look down when I'm walking so I can make sure I avoid them.  I take long strides so it doesn't match up with the cracks in the sidewalk and trips me up sometimes.

No, I think it's a byproduct of the arithmomania because I tend to count them, too, if I'm not counting my steps.  When I'm driving, I pretend the car is jumping over cracks and shadows in the road, too, and count those.

I have a really screwed up mind...

No, no. Not screwed up. Just more...imaginative? Or er...overly attached to numbers? xD But no, not screwed up. *pats*

verdandi

No, no, I'm screwed up.  I'm so bad that in high school I was borderline schizophrenic.  But it's ok.  After 28 years, I've made peace with it.  And two of my stepdaughters have OCD, so having it myself helps me understand them.  Therefore, I'm glad I do.

And actually, I'm really bad at remembering numbers.

Oh! But I have a photographic memory! Just not for numbers.

Whaaaa... *jealous too* No fair! >:(

Hmmm this is hard...

-If I am listening to a group of people having a conversation and I am not taking part in it, I start typing out the conversation with my fingers on an imaginary keyboard... >.> *too much time on the computer* Jeez, sometimes I catch myself doing this when watching movies!

-I'm a nail biter too, but whenever I'm REALLY nervous I HAVE to chew gum. I carry it everywhere!

-I can't stand loose change. Whenever I have it, I randomly drop coins onto the sidewalk or into fountains. Or on shelves... Just as long as the change is dropped. (Plus, seeing a little kid pick up a stray penny makes me happy! ^^) Change is too jangly.

-I don't wear nailpolish because I really can't. T_T I fuss over it too much, and one little chip or something uneven = *RAGE* lolol

-I can't stand when people read the ending of a book first or skip parts. Consequently, I can't NOT finish a book once it has been started. No matter how horrible it is...

I think that's all for now, but I'm positive that there's more. XD

...And there go my fishbots! Thank you Rioui Poo~! *hugs*

Nooooo.  I actually developed it instead of being born with it.  My memory used to be really bad, and then I realized that if something was really interesting to me, I would remember it exactly so I somehow figured out how to control it.  I can take pictures of things in my head if I know I'll need to recall it.  And I can pull it up like looking at a photo album.  If my husband asks me something I'll say, "wait, let me pull it up" and start going through the "pictures" until I find the one I need.  If I'm staring at something with glassy eyes, he knows I'm taking a picture lol.

I'm the same way! Well, mostly.  I have indeed stopped a couple books in the middle because they were irritating me and making me angry, but mostly I have to finish them.  For movies and TV series, though, I have a tendency of looking it up on Wikipedia first so I know how it ends.  That way when I get really nervous that it's not going the way I want, I can remind myself how it will end.  I have no idea why I like this for movies but hate it for books.

I do this too! When I'm listening to a lecturer or something, I imagine typing out every word he says. And I type it in rhythm.

Quirks everywhere~

some of mine:
- When I listen to music I imagine myself diving in and I try separating the individual instruments. It is really amazing n-n
- When I don't do that I start tapping with my fingers or feet on the beat. Side-effect of playing the base maybe...
- When I'm thinking I chew on my fingers, pens or pencils.
- I paint a background for a painting and then put it on display on my easel in my room to be tormented by not being quite sure how to finish it off. (there are currently 2 canvasses with backgrounds staring at me, part of a duo I'm trying to create)
When I think of more, you'll know~

I just found a new one: compliments make me work harder, because I don't believe I deserve them.

When someone compliments me, I don't think, "yay! I did something good!" I think, "Shit.  I need to live up to that expectation."

Example: I cleaned all the SFX out of Switch Girl 45 because Kuri told me to try. Kiriane told me my redraws were really good, and now I feel compelled to clean every single SFX out of every SG chapter, no matter how painful it may be.  And I went from being lazy about redraws to "THEY MUST NOT KNOW IT WAS EVER THERE" about them.

*dead

But I still think my redraws suck and keep putting notes in like "YOU'D BETTER COVER THIS BECAUSE IT'S CRAP."

Dunno if this is a strange quirk but when im trying to. o something, i tend to "forget" it in 5 mins. and remember it a few mins or hrs later.

Ex. Mom asked me to buy vinegar but just when i was out of the gate,,i forgot what i was gonna buy. Took me about 3 mins to remember what it was  :swt:

LOL  I do that a lot.  So I now "carve" things I need to remember on my forearm with my finger.  By visualizing it actually being carved in my skin, it's making it a permanent reminder until I complete the task.  Every time I look at my arm, I'm suddenly reminded of the thing.  It's a little morbid, but it works really well.

Once I've completed the task, I "wipe" it clean like a slate, running my hand over and imagine it smoothing out.  If I don't do that, I'll subconsciously remember that there's something carved there but can never remember what - always a sign that I've completed it.

It's a very psychological technique, but that's what makes it so effective!

Wow Ver! You're really attuned to yourself. I think it comes with age.
Not that I'm saying your old or anything. You just have more wisdom and experience so you know what works for you.

But I do the same thing about forgetting things. I'll walk into a room and not know what I was going to do there. Usually I can remember after a minute or two xP

My dad has this really strange quirk, It's funny, he would walk into a room. I'd be in the living room, or basement, or anywhere really and he look around, look at me, and then walk away. He does it to everyone. Even my mom xP

We think its psychological partial-unconscious thing where he is "checking" in on everyone. But it's still funny xP

You ladies/gents are much different from me. O_O it takes me weeks/months or even years to remember. And I'd be like "Ohhhhh, so that's what I was suppose to do". Like I remember something and then when I do it, I forget, and then I remember again, and then I forgot. This happens a lot when my parents tell me to do chores, and I like forget about it; and get in trouble at the end. :3

I do this too! But I usually catch myself before other people notice.  I think...

I discovered a new one! That unfortunately, my husband discovered a long time ago and has been exploiting for YEARS before I caught on.

If someone starts singing part of a song or a jingle and doesn't finish, I'll finish it for them. Every. Time.

Husband: "I like chicken, I like liver..."
Me: "Meow mix, meow mix, please deliver! DAMMIT I DID IT AGAIN!"
Husband: *cracks up*
......

Husband: "I like chicken, I like liver...."
Me: ....
Husband: "I LIKE CHICKEN, I LIKE LIVER...."
Me: "A HA! I didn't say it! ...verbally."
......

Husband: "I can't get no..."
Me: *whispers* "...satisfaction..."
......

It never fails.  :whaat:

LOL.  I blow kisses and wink.  I'm not intimidating enough for your method...

How did you learn that you do that?

Hahaha, just reading back is amusing.

@Ver
That quirk you have where you finish off sentences... Golden. Your husband is great. :goodjob:

@Pau
I think I just discovered another quirk of yours: self-violence. @.@

@Jess
You go, Glen Coco.

Quirks:
1) Due to a superstition I've heard as a kid, I've always stepped through the threshold with my right foot. Something about starting the day "right".
2) When people stare at me, I use my full height to stare down my nose at them. Mwuahahaha. The effect is glorious, if I do say so myself.
3) Whenever I'm shooting a free-throw in a basketball game, I always bounce the ball twice, roll it against my palm, and bounce it three more times before I shoot.
4) When I'm elongating stuff, I always consciously aim to stretch the letters/characters to 7 repetitions, ie "Whoaaaaaaa" or "Say what!!!!!!!". I've been doing it for years and idk why. (7's my favourite number and birth date.)
5) When filling out forms, if they're at different boxes, I always fill in my surname first before going back up to write my first and middle names. Years of filling in exam papers... orz

Dats a lot of quirks...did u realize them all while u wer in exams? o.O

Vauxhall

Yeah, LOL. A month-long intensive study period + two weeks of exams will do that to you.
I found out #1 as I was walking into an exam room,
#2 was when people were staring at me since I was reading and walking at the same time,
#3 was discovered when I went for a short study break xD, and
#4 was when I was complaining on my Twitter, LMFAO.
Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure.

Pau

Dat must hav been one long procastinating week :swt:

Strange quirk:
I tend to make a "sign" to a music i like. For example, when im listening to fireflies rock version by owl city i make a guitarist gesture,  when im listening to sensitivity by alex goot i make three forward steps, and when im listening to rock and roll by avril lavigne i would raise my hand up and sing "and put up those LITTLE fingers to the sky" (error in lyrics is intended cuz m***** finger is bad)

Angel~

Whenever I'm alone and the music is blaring I tend to sing along and sorta dance a little as well...

thanks to Shineshan <3

`Shally.

The music part gestures are kind of normal; just that it's embarrassing doing it by yourself while everyone else is like staring at your awkwardly. xD
I do that too, angel & pau. Except, I don't really do it publicly. :3 Too embarrassing.

Sometimes I imagine myself typing on a keyboard even though I'm just watching tv or doing homework on paper. It's like my fingers move as it goes when it wants to type something.

Jess is right. 6'4'' by your measuring standards.

Holy crap.  Your hotness level just rose 80%.  I'd bow down but apparently I don't need to.

I freaking edited his post instead of quoting.  %!@(%$U

I ALWAYS hit the "modify this post" button and catch myself.  This time I didn't.  Ugh.  :noway: :omg: :donwan:

He said he was 6'4" and I said his hotness level rose 80%.

I remembered why I quoted you! I said I do that too. But not often enough to constitute a quirk, I guess.
Only when I feel restless. *nods*

I tend to play the bass with my fingers when I'm listening to music, but I'm not holding my bass.

Woo! Regularly? Are you in a band?
I suppose that explains part of your signature... I never made the connection. xD

Angel~

For now I'm just taking lessons, but I'll start playing in a band in January!

You do get the other part of my signature right?

Vauxhall

Woo! That's soon!
What other part...? o_o

I've been taking lessons for a year already, so it's not that soon? I'm really excited since a bass is a band instrument.
The rest of it?
