I know.  I hated renting, especially around tax time.  I also really love doing home improvements and it chafed to have my hands tied in that area as a renter.

I say, you remind me of someone I used to know.  You weren't "jabbberwocky" or "invocations" in another life, were you?

Nope. Never used those names =/

LOL I love doing home improvements too. Or rather, I go crazy in home furnishing stores and linen places. Do I need MORE bedsheets? Not really, but I'll buy new ones anyway <3 Should I look at MORE pots and pans? Oooohhhh maybe I should get a casserole dish hmmm <3

My partner says that bringing me to any store (except for sports equipment stores) is like bringing a child to candy land... T_T that's another reason I want that mortgage, money tied up is money well invested.

Hmmm I used to work on Galism, but these days I don't have the time to translate from scratch any more, so I just double check new translations for whatever series Lily summons me to. That, or do SFX for random series like Ojousama wa Oyomesama and Ryuu no Hanawazurai. I might return to full-time translating in November though =D maybe then.

And yes... I'm waiting desperately until I can afford the 20% downpayment on an apartment, and then the blissful life of paying your own mortgage (INSTEAD of renting and paying someone else's mortgage) begins <3

You guys are all so eloquent =/

Hmm love. I have a partner of 3 years and we have already mapped out the next 30 years of financial expenditure (mortgage #1, stupid wedding in two countries, cranky kids and their extorbitant school fees, mortgage #2). We have even discussed the future division of labour within the household and expectations for cohabitation.

At this point you're probably thinking: Whuuuuuut... sounds like a contract.

Well, it is--a social contract between partners. We're willingly entering into this contract because we both assume that this nebulous concept of "love" exists, and that it exists between us.

For him, love is spending most of his money on me, and spending Friday nights at my house instead of out drinking with his friends. It is about changing his lifestyle (start exercising) and diet (no more going to his beloved McDonalds) so that I don't worry about his health. It's about meeting my family and going to meals with them even though he feels really uncomfortable at those outings. And it's about calling me once in a while, even though he really hates talking on the phone.

For me, love is thinking about him first thing when I wake up, last thing before I sleep. It is about buying his favourite cheese and drinks when I'm at the supermarket, and spending 3 hours cooking shepherd's pie for him. It's letting him go out with his friends and game into the night. It's giving him a foot rub after he's had a long day at work. It's about sitting through movie episodes that he loves but I hate. It's also about being willing to sacrifice a couple of new dresses so that I can get him new jeans instead.

And for both of us, love is about making sure we make those incremental changes now so that when the time comes, we slip into a comfortable and easy life together, and lead the loving life we want to, instead of letting everything crash in all at once and (and losing the person who matters most to us).

What is your love like?

Welcome in!

I'm Ruraine, occasional CN-EN translator (and emergency JP-EN/SFX translator for Lily). Maybe we'll work together on a project someday?

Also, in terms of personal information, I have just graduated with a Commerce and an Arts degree, regrettably don't have a mortgage yet, have finally secured respectable employment for next year, and currently moonlight as a sessional tutor for one class of college kids. Don't worry, you're probably only around my age =/

Shout to icewing: WHAT FACEBOOK PAGE?? T_T nobody tells me these things...

oh and yes, it does frustrate me to read like 66/100 of a series and then find out they've been dropped. It's like if only half of a book you were reading actually got written at all (looks at fiction.net and fanfiction.net). Unsatisfying.

not much we can do about it?

well an argument could be raised that US publishers have licenses to SELL certain manga after English translation, but that doesn't preclude other people from sharing said manga (the intellectual property btw and grunt work is not a rip off from the US publishers) for free.

In other words, I accept if an author doesn't want their work to be translated and distributed for free (pretty dumb author huh) but I don't accept that if a company gets permission to distribute a certain copy of the work in one market, it needs to try and stop every other provider from distributing similar (but definitely not the same) copy in other markets.

OR DO WE GET ALL THE LICENSED MANGA IRRESPECTIVE OF WHERE WE LIVE.

We could always say our audience live in... Pakistan? I'm pretty sure that limited English manga get there. This is a whole different pie, right?

Argh, we'll have to die soon, too.
WAIT. NOT UNTIL I RELEASE DNA!  :crywithno:
Well, these publishers sure have a knack of pissing everyone off~

wow Lily, such determination in the face of terrible expectations T_T

I was talking to my bf last night about this and he said that if those publishers (or better yet, mangaka) wanted to revive their ailing sales, the best thing they could do would be to release all their manga ONLINE through a site like OManga/MFox, and then get users to pay monthly subscription fees or get revenue from advertisements (ala Youtube)... and then do that OpenManga thing and let people scanlate for free (thus saving themselves the cost of paying bored paper-pushers to do it)... because hey, us readers can't afford to buy all the manga we'd like to read, and not everyone can read non-English manga.

...too bad that won't come true.

I went on it a few minutes ago to check on Nononono... and some wierd window popped up saying that OM will be removing its content within the week! (and I see in the chatbox that Nyhte tripped onto that notice too)

T__T someone, tell me whether the news is true or just some hoaxer!!

Cute guys... omg yes. Too bad I see so few of them around T_T thank god for bus stops where you can rake your eyes over everyone who passes and pretend you're gauging how long the waiting line is.

..I think it is unpleasant to take exams, NO MATTER WHAT THE WEATHER IS!! because let's face it--there's always something we can do that is better suited to the current weather, than sit an exam:

sunny day: great day for the beach
windy day: great day for kites
cloudy day: great day to stay indoors and read
rainy day: great day to watch a movie by the heater/fireplace
snowy day: great day for snow fights or hot chocolate

no day: great day for exams.

Omg Michelle! You read the Mortal Instruments series too? :D I finished book two a few months ago, but haven't gotten around to book three yet. (Either that or I read book three because I couldn't get my hands on book two... whatever).

Really excited about how the plot is developing, and how relationships will work out. Have you finished the series?

As for HP.. that had one of the worst endings ever. I like ranting about the series as a whole but don't want to offend anyone so I'll shut up =/

Meh. You're going to HK almost a full month before I do. *stabs* update me on the weather.

Try to go to the night markets--cheap good food and cheap China ripoffs.

Mmmm good books ^________^

I do not recommend the HP series or Twilight series to anyone who values logical reasoning and good character development. Or to anyone who can't stand moody angsty characters.

What I do recommend include:
-The Troy Game, a 4-part series by Sara Douglass was an amazing read. Kept getting tricked by her =.="
-Eon by Alison Goodman was decent--though sometimes I felt like kicking the main character.
-Any of L.E. Modesitt's books--try the Magic Engineer in tandem with Colours of Chaos (if I'm not mistaken), both from the 16-part Saga of Recluce. That is an infinitely great combo.
-Any of Trudi Canavan's books--have read them all with enjoyment.

...for the fun, I prove you wrong. But don't the others speak too?

Next is Lily again :D

#22
o.O I saw my name. Why am I getting pinched?

But yeah. Scanlation. Even when I'm not the one doing it, seeing tons of untranslated small text and SFX makes me feel sad. Graphics don't annoy me as much---unless the scanlating group literally pasted their translations ON TOP OF the text in the raws, and you can see a bit poking out here and there. Ugh.

wrong :)

Hi CJ :) oooh editor in training.... >.> finish training soon, then you will have your name on the MOST WANTED list!! (or so it seems to me... XD)

Heya Iteza :) My majors are English (as an International Language) and Management... I know, rather fluffy, but I like learning about cultures and about mediating between them ^^"

...my first real anime was Ayashi no Ceres (Ceres Celestial Legend). After that was Rave. Those were when I was 14---

why? ...because prior to that I didn't have time for Saliormoon etc... T_T... should I feel deprived, or relieved?

lololol. Didn't think I'd get a reply so soon.

Thanks for the welcome, Charmy (hopefully it isn't undeserved), and I'll zip myself down to DNA once I get staff access, Furgeson ^^

Hiya,

My name is Raine and I'm a new translator ^^ Thanks for taking me under your wing!  :o_o:

I'm a final-year uni student (Is that good? Bad?) who grew up studying Chinese and later minored in Japanese (my Jap is very, very shallow though--so don't ask me to translate for it  :omg:). In my spare time I enjoy reading, pottering around the house, and watching anime or terrible English movies. I have also had some experience in translating--but that was a long, long time ago.

Please take care of me and always, do not hesitate to be critical of my work--
