Title: Instant Messenger Clients
Post by: Zain on March 20, 2010, 16:37
Hey, guys! Which IM-ing clients do you prefer?
There are so many out there! And they all put their own little tweek on the modern instant messaging features.
Of course, you're not limited to using only one, so if you use a combination of them, do tell :)
I'm curious!

If you're wondering why I'm asking, here's a little background info...

I've been having problems with Windows Live Messenger [my most used messenger] as of recently [sometimes my friends don't receive my replies or vice versa; it's very troublesome.]
I've experimented with Skype, which is great, except messages are sometimes delivered much later than they are sent o.O
I don't like Gtalk, I don't know why. I just don't. I rather prefer logging into Gmail, and using the chatting capabilities over there.
Surfing the web yesterday, I also came upon this interesting page on Lifehacker: http://lifehacker.com/375391/five-best-instant-messengers (http://lifehacker.com/375391/five-best-instant-messengers)
So, I tried both Digsby and Pidgin. They're fine, but somehow where ever I go, problems await me -_-
I thought Pidgin was very clean and easy to work with, but it would always freeze on me.
Digsby was very wonderful; I thought it was so creative and just such a nice way to put everything together...but it too was freezing on me :\
I've been considering if it's my laptop, but I really hope it's not, since it's new and so wonderful and I would hate to think anything is wrong with it T__T

So, there's where my curiosity came from. I would be delighted to hear about which messengers you guys like to use and your experiences/pet peeves with them! :)

ever tried using Yahoo IM? I always have problems with MSN as well, it keeps logging me on and off so I switched over to Yahoo and haven't had any problems =)

Maybe you can try Skype? Yahoo will do as well.

Personally I am still using MSN even thou that I am having some troubles with it... Sometimes I don't receive people's message and then they get mad at me for not answering them. =_="

I use Miranda IM. Very lightweight, which is what I want, since MSN client took up too much ram usage. It's very plain on default, but it's highly customizable.

What's nice is that there's lots off add-ons and extra stuff you can do with it. Like I think there's add-on for feed support as well and stuff like that. Only thing I had to get use to for chatting was you have to do ctrl+enter to send messages.

Though sometimes it lags a little for me... Otherwise, it's a pretty solid messenger. I like it exclusively for it's small footprint. Need more RAM for them games and photoshop ;)

I do use Skype for now.
And I would like to try Yahoo, but don't want to go through the trouble of creating an email account for the purpose of chatting XD

@Shiki: That is the exact same problem I'm having -_- It's really annoying. I think it's a bug, an annoying bug at that >_>

I heard Miranda was nice, too, but haven't had a chance to try it. I'll take a look at it soon, though! :)
