Title: My desktop...
Post by: HeavenlyQueen on January 29, 2010, 19:46
I was looking at the show your desktop thread, and so I was wondering how I could do a whole lot of cool stuff to my laptop's desktop to make it more personalized... I just want to know the different programs you use.....I have vista so i don't know if that makes a difference or not? :swt:

Also... I heard people are downloading windows7 for free.....is that true? :woohehe:

Sure, as long as you don't get caught doing so >_>

I use Stardock Fence to organize my desktop and you can find the link somewhere in the "Show your Desktop" thread.

For window 7... I have some friends who downloaded it for free but I don't want to try it. My parents' friend who works with computers everyday says that if you get caught you might not be able to access your computer anymore or something like that because they will kinda block the window 7? X.x I just heard her say something like that but not sure....

On the entity such as the intrawebz you can download anything, as long as you know where... Mainly for this type of stuff, you'd want to use private trackers where you know it's secure and you won't get a fake, or virus version.

RocketDock - http://rocketdock.com/ (http://rocketdock.com/)

If you looked at mine, it's that thing right about the start menu. It's basically kind of like the apple dock which I use for common applications.

Launchy - http://www.launchy.net/ (http://www.launchy.net/)

That panda thing I have is called Launchy. Basically it's basically a quick version of the start search menu. The big difference is that you can set it to only index certain folders. So... lets say you have a folder with all your application shortcuts on it, you can set it just to index that and have a very quick application launcher/file searcher.

This just switches my wallpaper at random every hour or so from a bunch of wallpapers I've downloaded over the years.

If you don't want to download or buy Windows 7, there are actually lots of things people have made enhancements in Vista and XP to get the taskbar and stuff more looking like Windows 7. A quick google search found this...

I know it says XP but I believe it has support for Vista as well.

As for how well it works, I don't know -.-

Windows 7 for common tasks there isn't all that much improvement. It's mainly better efficiency at exploiting multi core and multi threaded programs.
