http://www.digitalmangaguild.com/ <-- I know everyone's been talking about something like this since forever (and I guess this is old news, but I wanted to discuss it with all you lovely scanlators regardless!) so I think it's a great idea. Bottom line, they're uh "localizing". And seriously, being able to get paid for doing the crap we're doing just sounds awesome.
I hope the guild is successful! It's so exciting that they have rights to over 400 series right now~ Any opinions? :)
xEDIT: Their prez seriously needs a trim o_o
This is a much-needed update some many months later: My opinion on the Guild is at an all-time low right now. Turns out you get paid depending on how much the series you work on makes (and trust me, the commission percentage is teensy.) Their members have also been sending C&D requests to scanlators...and somehow managing to rid them of their mediafire accounts. Really not the right way to go about doing this, DMG.
OMFG!! WHOA >.< i didn't know about this!
:3 it does sound awesome! i need money -_-
I LOLed at the guy in the video screen; didn't watch it, just looked at him and the steps..
How come they don't have a super duper editing process? Do they recieve awesome raws?
Ahahaha...I didn't know about it either. >_<
Eh, I guess it's an idea worth thinking about. And it's legal. Though, I guess that means anything that they don't have the rights to, we can't do.
Wow, this looks enticing and interesting o_o Never thought that this would actually come true :O
I actually never heard of this before... Do they really pay us? O_o Why does it sound too good to be true? LOL
It does sound pretty awesome, plus it's a way to earn money while sitting in front of your computer. XD
LOL, Shiki...It's gotten some online media attention, so I'm guessing it's reliable. Though we can't understimate the power of Candy Mountain. We could get there, looking for our money, and only find people tearing out our intestines D:
It's always a thought.
xD haha...what's Candy Mountain? ???
=_= i would want some money...D:
@Icy: Just Youtube the video Charlie the unicorn Candy Mountain and you will get what Lily meant. LOL
P.S. That video annoyed the heck out of me... poor Charlie. D:
LOL, to this day I still laugh hysterically whenever I hear "Charlie! Let's go to candy mountain, Charlie!" XD
I DIED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE WATCHING THAT :omg:
i get what you mean now! our livers and kidneys and intestines...oh yes >.<
The idea sounds very rewarding (obviously), but it seems like you have to be over 18 :<
....>.> i can um...fake my age :3
just hope that they don't know how to stalk people
Lmao, so...anyone want to give it a try? It seems that we need to form small groups enough to cover all the task which are translating, cleaning/typesetting and proofreading (aka editor for them). :D
Tests doesn't seem too hard since we are basically all used to them anyway. xD
It sounds a bit fishy to me... If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
QuoteQ. Will my affiliation with scanlation groups hurt me?
A. No. We are looking to recruit localizers, people who have skills and want to be part of our community. We are not concerned with whether or not you may have scanlated before, that is your business with what you do on your own time.
I guess that's good.
QuoteQ. What genres will be offered?
A. Currently we are planning to start off with mainly yaoi titles, but eventually we will add more mainstream genres like shoujo and shounen.
I'm out. I haven't lost my innocence yet.

Answer:
QuoteQ. What are the quality of the images that I will have to work on?
A. As this is still early, we cannot give a final answer. The quality will vary, it will be best to know how to both retouch and letter.
Many things are still vague, like what will be paid,
how they're going to get paid and which publishers are involved. Many other standards still need to be decided on, so I guess it's best if we just wait until the first few volumes/series are published and the first 'localizers' are paid before considering joining. This should be around winter 2011/spring 2012.
I also wonder if you have to be a US resident, as it's an initiative from a Los Angeles publishing company, or if you need a credit card or digital identification etc. If you have to be from the US, many of us can't join anyway.

I second that. It is all too uncertain. And yaoi is really not up my alley...
If we get paid for this sort of work, we might get into legal troubles for copyright issues (at least in US). Just because it tells you there is no legal worries, this still violate the law unless they purchase copyright (which is very expensive and very fishy)
Also they want your credit card information and personal information.
Q. Can I translate from English to another language?
A. Unfortunately, no. We want to keep the translation as pure as possible, so we are only looking for Japanese to "x-language" translators.
--> okay, most of us are Chinese translators >.>
I think we should sit and wait for "further updates".
