Title: Tokyo Says "Sayonara" To Freedom Of Speech?
Post by: Sharwin on December 13, 2010, 02:25
http://kotaku.com/5712825/tokyo-says-sayonara-to-freedom-of-speech (http://kotaku.com/5712825/tokyo-says-sayonara-to-freedom-of-speech)

Apparently some new bill maybe passed allowing some new regulations on anime/manga/games in Japan. This is mainly to do with censoring manga for virtual youth.

http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2010/12/13/mangaka-my-publisher-has-banned-school-uniforms/ (http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2010/12/13/mangaka-my-publisher-has-banned-school-uniforms/)

Even though the it isn't officially in the law, some (BL) mangaka are reporting that the publisher has banned School Uniforms along with potentially even using High School Students.\

NOTE: That Sankaku link has some ads that are 18+, enter at your own caution.

Anyways... Things look like they could get bad real quick :S

I understand trying to protect the youth. But I don't see how that law is going to help. Making things forbidden just makes it more interesting and makes people want to look at it because it's forbidden.

Furthermore, to possibly ban school uniforms would be kind of senseless. Not all school related mangas/animes are smutty or graphic. It also makes me wonder how the artists and writers are going to deal with that. Having a school aged character is one central way to make the manga more approachable to the audience because the audience can see him/herself in the character's shoes. Or at the very least, it makes it more plausible and more relative to the audience.

And does the label "virtual youth" apply to? What does that even mean?

there are some over the top games that are waaay too smutty/borderline porn, but it doesn't make sense to ban school uniforms... that's just a freaky fetish of some people. and i think people that read the manga/anime/game are sensible enough not to commit violent acts just because they see it in some book..... this is stupid!  >:(

i think it's not a issue of a war between the mangaka and the govt..it's just the govt trying to put its leg to interefere in such matters to show that yes, they DO care about our youth yadda yadda ... let's face it...the present situation w/h it is not working out...if you add this rule in, you're just in the midst of over-stepping your boundaries as well =.=

I think the Underground Manga Association isn't a bad idea. Actually, I can kind of picture it in this rebel way.

Scores of mangakas writing to their heart's content with characters set in high school and in school uniform and whatever else they dream to that is banned. And all of this work is published in some private printing company and distribute to small groups of fans.

I don't know. I was thinking of ashcans (type of comic: http://freelanceink.blogspot.com/2008/11/ash-can-comics.html (http://freelanceink.blogspot.com/2008/11/ash-can-comics.html)).

So they already voted for the law...it will be affective starting 2011. Basically this law is stating that all manga, anime and games that contains: Violence, Sex, Crime, Homosexuality, etc. will be a crime to own, sell or create. Many great publishing and producing companies will go bye bye. >.>

Seriously...what will there be to read/watch/play in manga/anime/game if there is no action or any interesting fiction (or non-fiction) based theme? The world is going to be so boring. Well at least...other countries can still make what they want but we all know that some good badass stuff are all from Japan. ;_;

*dies a little inside* D: Why are the Japanese crippling their own economy?
By stopping the flow of such media, itll only make the people want it more. In the end, a black market will be forming for this stuff, especially because it's... Japan. *goes off into her Tower of Pessimism.

T.T It's not even authentic if it's not from Japan. >.> Dammit, it's bad enough that homosexuality is considered inapro-pro, but SEX? VIOLENCE? ARGHHHHHHHHH... Have all the world's politicians gone senile?! It's like I'm grasping at straws- I don't know where to begin with the ranting (or my rereading XD)

Well, at least that's what every bit of media that comes from Japan would like you to think.
I can't even imagine counting how many manga (alone >.>) have train pervs (Apparently, Japan has lots of professional perverts, and no, they just can't lurk in alleyways or be normal perverts, they just love trains too much... I really don't understand culture.) But it's all a trick. Really, it's all a conspiracy for those mangakas to be have an easy plot device.
Don't know how to start your next piece of work? Why not start it off on an overly crowded subway thing? :)
