Title: Scanlation Groups
Post by: Disturbance on September 25, 2010, 05:52
Am very upset now.

I was sourcing whether the project i wanted to take up the super-long name about the rich guy in the house manga was taken... then i decided to source for my favourite manga author's Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden... and then...

I got pretty upset.
I mean... just because you pick up a licensed manga. so you want to drop the licensed manga halfway just because you're scared of being taken down... i get the logic, but isn't it like disappointing the masses who have been looking forward to it?

That's why sometimes i rather some groups don't even pick up a manga. If they are going to drop it off halfway, why pick it up? And they still got the tendency to say... oh, because its licensed, because there's no audience, and so on and so forth, so you might as well select a few manga that you really are interested and start on with it until it's completed?

I mean it's super annoying for us leechers to have to google these hundreds pages just to find a glimmer of hope that something, a little bit of information, a piece of manga might come up only to find out that the scanlation group dropped it.

Sorry, i'm just doing abit of a ranting, because i always get annoyed when that happens. I mean seriously, so you pick up a manga and then start translating a few chapters, and then you just pat your butts and leave the remaining chapters to get done by some innocent manga group who has no manga to start off with, because you TOOK IT first? Other groups aint rubbish dump sites you know. =.=

not much we can do about it?

well an argument could be raised that US publishers have licenses to SELL certain manga after English translation, but that doesn't preclude other people from sharing said manga (the intellectual property btw and grunt work is not a rip off from the US publishers) for free.

In other words, I accept if an author doesn't want their work to be translated and distributed for free (pretty dumb author huh) but I don't accept that if a company gets permission to distribute a certain copy of the work in one market, it needs to try and stop every other provider from distributing similar (but definitely not the same) copy in other markets.

OR DO WE GET ALL THE LICENSED MANGA IRRESPECTIVE OF WHERE WE LIVE.

We could always say our audience live in... Pakistan? I'm pretty sure that limited English manga get there. This is a whole different pie, right?

oh and yes, it does frustrate me to read like 66/100 of a series and then find out they've been dropped. It's like if only half of a book you were reading actually got written at all (looks at fiction.net and fanfiction.net). Unsatisfying.

Totally agree with you ruraine about the frustrating part about reading incomplete manga.
And i got even madder when i realized some scanlation groups wanted to start on new projects, when they have like a dozen old projects that they translated a few chapters of and left it alone for close to a month before the new releases come out... why don't they just complete their ongoing ones, instead of just pure dropping them because there's very little interest? :(

I think the authors aint really unhappy about it - because they get their works to be free to the public - garner more interest and more attention to the author as well = free advertising. But its probably the publishers at work here, in order to protect their interests and maximize their profits, some of them can really go beyond.

Scanlation isn't everything.

Most admins (yes, even sysadmins) have other things to deal with. And now, with licensing and publishing threats, things are getting tough. Dropped projects are only natural, and a perfect way for other groups to get more projects! :D

But speed scanlating? Stealing other groups' projects? That's unexceptable.
A disregard to human labor and flooding uploading sites with leeching and LQ releases.

It was too idealistic. If that manga was real, they would've been shunned for incest, their child murdered, and then they'd have to get some fake passports and leave the country.
The child was just to sugar coat it and give it a good ending... ch 17 was more like an afterword than an actual chapter  :dignose:
