Post by: NieYiFan on August 19, 2010, 18:22
Now, I wanted to do a different studio, but since i remembered that the mojority of the users are female, i decided to go with clamp. So, lets hear them folks. I know theres got to be someone on this forum who has an opinion on this topic.

What is this CLAMP thing?
Title: Re: THoughts on CLAMP
Post by: NieYiFan on August 19, 2010, 20:54
It's the group that produce Tsubasa and Cardcaptor Sakura and XXXHolic

Post by: Furgeson on August 19, 2010, 21:34
Meh, those are shounen. The only shounen brand that I'd know would be shounen jump.

I personally have nothing against CLAMP. ;O
I watch season 1 and 2 of Tsubasa and also read it but dropped it lol.
...Actually I have no strong opinion about this. xD

Cardcaptor Sakura---Shounen???? What the fuck kind of crack are you doing??? Sakura is mahou-shoujo manganime.  :wahaha:

Post by: Shiki on August 20, 2010, 02:34
LOL I remember I used to watch Cardcaptor Sakura when I was in grade 3! I used to like it a lot. But now when I look at it all I can think is "Damn this is way to... anyway this look old."

I believe that xxxHolic is also Shounen. XD

I don't have any strong opinions about CLAMP either. I started Sakura and Tsubasa, but dropped both in the middle... not because they are bad but because I thought it seemed a little slow.

Post by: icewing on August 21, 2010, 20:12
yeah......Tsubasa was just....average.....not enough action!  just standing around and talking all the time..... :swt:
Title: Re: THoughts on CLAMP
Post by: NieYiFan on August 21, 2010, 23:10
Isn't "just standing arouns and chatting" the meat and potatoes of most shoujo manganime?????
Title: Re: THoughts on CLAMP
Post by: Furgeson on August 22, 2010, 01:12
Anime is horrible when it comes to its meat and potatoes tho.
Which is why I prefer manga... just skip over those scenes XD Who cares about the plot?
I just say xxholic and tsubasa, and i thought ah fuck it, mostly shounen  :goodjob:

Clamp has there characters make cameos in every series. Tsubasa has SOOOO MANY CAMEOS. :wahaha:

waited for tsubasa to complete..the translated version.
technically not really..... what happened was i got engrossed reading it in school library so i continue.....

sakura...i guess if you want to talk about roots....i watched the anime....in cantonese! (but it didn't help me with my dialect skills)
It was great for a schoolkid.....but for me right now makes me feel its kind of lame...

i enjoyed chobits... the parts where Chi started to reminsce with who am i...where do i really belong really resonated with me lol.
i still feel lost now @_@

read suki....one volume....wasn't much, didn't really like the drawing..... read it for the teddy bear.

read wish tooo.....concidentally found it in the library.....read up to the volumes my school had, and read the rest on my laptop in school.....free wireless leh ^_^

first of all peeps this is a anime sub forum so you should be discussing about anime and not manga
and my opinion on CLAMP is really bad for anime ( manga is okay)
tsubasa was really long and annoying , both seasons with an exception of a decent ova i guess , yet i endured those hellish seasons  :crywithno:
xxxholic is watchable to some point
thats pretty much all i know of clamp anime i guess xD

There's one thing to be having the new blood be insolent,
another to have leechers telling us that we're spammers (which, we sadly admit, we are.)  :dignose:

i only watched cardcaptor sakura anime....and it was basically...... in.... catonese. I could understand,  :swt: but up to now, i still can't speak it. I didn't really watch tsubasa, caught a few ep and that was it. Thats why i gave my evaluation based on the manga.
It doesn't really matter because most of the anime are based on the manga, ANYWAY.

Hmmm I feel a little complicated when it comes to CLAMP's works :swt:

I really like xxxHolic and Gohou Drug (which for some reason, are on hiatus) and X. But I'm not keen on watching CCS (used to watch a little but didn't really like it), Tsubasa or even Magic Knight Rayearth. I suppose it'll have to depend on theme *skip

I'm actually an avid fan of Clamp, though I haven't gotten around to read all of their artworks. So far, I've read CCS, Clamp School Detectives, Tokyo Babylon, X/1999, XXX Holic and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle.  *skip

I love the variety of characters that Clamp provided and the complicated relationships that bounds them together! And I agree that TRC and XXX Holic are related in a slightly complicated way, however, that's probably why I particularly love these two manga! I love reading manga with a complicated storyline with twist in every turn and unpredictable endings~  :=D:

xxxHolic is one of my favorite mangas, I actually own 10 volumes of it.

I love CLAMP, their drawing really appeals to me because of the way they use asymmetrical curves everywhere. I haven't really read much of the others because the library doesn't have them when I go to look.  Appalling, I know.

Disturby you're quite right :shy: I'm okay with historical but rather picky with fantasy-related theme. I'm all in for the horror/ mystery type.

Zephyr>> Are you a collector as well?

I'm a collector so I buy tankoubon of my favourite series :woohehe:

Gate7 is one of Clamp's latest works. I heard they'll be releasing the anime. Sounds good to me...!

No, I just buy books and series that I would rent from the library more than twice a month.  Hellsing and Black Bird are next. ^__^

I think CLAMP is pretty amazing. I'm really impressive with the universes they've created and how half of them are interconnected by the same characters or world. They also write in a wide variety of genres. I haven't read all of their work though. Partially out of laziness and partially out of distaste. Not distaste as in I hate certain works, but that certain works never appealed enough to me to read it. Though, I assume those works must be well done also. I think the longest impression I have is from WISH. Out of all their works, I enjoyed that the most.

Overall, CLAMP is great, but I wouldn't say I'm an giant fan. Most of the mangas I read, I judge by each series. It's rare for me to think about the author and his/her many works.

My policy: READING ONLY COMPLETED MANGAS...be it books or manga....but its extended to good manga like Skip Beat! , Kaichou wa maid sama and katekyo hitman reborn :)!

:O I see.

I collect manga that I like and I read them repeatedly ^^ it's a satisfaction to see the collection(s) on my bookshelf. I have about 100+ yaoi manga hiding sitting on my bookshelf :woohehe: and sometimes there are people who would notice them.

Disturby>> you remind me of my cousin sister :=X: she'll start screaming at me or would purposely call me up (she stays in another region) to nag at me for passing her incomplete manga to read (should have seen that coming from anyone...!)

I bought Parfait Tic from vol 1 - 17 then stopped 'coz the tankoubon was slow and I'm starting to lose interest. I know it would be painful to continue reading as well >3> and I lent her the series. lol and the next time she visited me, she nagged me endlessly!

banzai to Clamp. They position themselves "different". Even the xxxHolic and Gohou Drug books are printed slightly bigger than average manga sizes. And their cover is always black <3333333

urgh.....i was finding the bishie thread...because i spent whole day stalking a bishie on youtube =.=

nbm~ cool you have 100+ yaoi books....you can compete with my bro....but he has a mix of shoujo x shounen. Shoujo is for me to raed, teeheehee :P basically i just read online....if i can find it outside like my school library has the complete volumes of Phantom Dream (which is .... idk, if you know me, you know that i get very short-tempered and mad at people who decides to pause a project that they started half-way...) for phantom dream, it has 5 vols that was published like in 2005/2008 and only two chapters are available on manga sites =.=

oh...you reminded me. I was going to be annoyed at charmy for starting me on hana to akuma, which is indeed a good series and i was bored, so i read it up to chapter 50 i s'pose. she's lucky that hana to akuma had frequent updates, and is completed XD

The older CLAMP works are good.   CLAMP usually has good storyline and art.  They are usually melodramatic and a bit serious but it's cool.

Their better works:
Magic Knight Rayearth
X Japan
Tokyo Babylon

Code Geass
Wish
Chobits

Their (slightly) boring works:

Card Captor
xxxHolic
Tsubasa Chronicles

I don't mind Clamp. I like some of their works like xxxHolic, Tsubasa, and X but sometimes I get a little annoyed at their reuse of characters and sometimes I think its cool.

My little imagination thinks they've got a whole plan for it but then my brain is like "Really? You have that little of an imagination you can't make up a new character?" I mean they even keep the same names in a lot of them I do believe!
Title: Re: THoughts on CLAMP

I love CLAMP. Their art style is pretty distinctive, and whilst some of their series (I'm thinking Tsubasa) went crazy in terms of their plot, there's something grand in their version of craziness. There was a reason they re-used characters in Tsubasa repeatedly (I think the series was to celebrate an important anniversary for them, I forget the details). They're not perfect, far from it, and their art style is not without bugs (really, guys, they get a bit toooo stretched sometimes), but they're definitely distinctive.

I really liked their earlier works like card captor sakura, chobits, angelic layer but I'm not too sure about their later ones. I didn't really get the plot in tsubasa and I had to read the wiki to get it -_-. XXXHolic is interesting but the thing that really puts me off reading clamp mangas watching clamp animes now are their freakily long arms. They draw children really well, why is it that when they draw adults, the proportions go waaaay off >.<

edit: oops just realised this was in the anime section
Title: Re: THoughts on CLAMP
Post by: tinnako on March 29, 2013, 11:49
I know! The animes can be harder than the manga, because they have less of the awesome detail and style, so the dangly long arms and legs can just look even more freaky. Like, in the manga, they almost get away with it, but put it in an anime where the characters are moving around and walking and stuff? Just doesn't work as well. I know. I love CLAMP, but if they agreed to make the limbs like, 30% shorter, I might love them even more!
